MTV Moves Forward with Teen Wolf Series
Just a few days after it was announced that the ’80s cult classic Heathers was being remade for TV, MTV has announced plans to produce a pilot for a Teen Wolf TV series. Is this the new thing? Turning classic films into TV series instead of remaking them on the big screen? Well, I suppose changing mediums is one way to avoid a backlash from fans.
There have been discussions about a Teen Wolf remake for a while now (at one point, Smallville star Tom Welling was rumoured to be starring), but I hadn’t heard anything about a Teen Wolf TV show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, the show was first announced back in January as a possible pick-up for MTV, depending on whether or not they liked the script. It’s hard not to be reminded of the Canadian TV show Big Wolf on Campus, but apparently they are looking to take this in a much more serious direction. Liz Gateley, senior VP of MTV series development, had this to say:
“It has a fresh take and is very different from the original… It has more of an American Werewolf in Paris feel to it. It’s a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the center who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques.”
American Werewolf in Paris… not London? Big difference! The script was written by Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds), who is also apparently writing the Voltron movie. Seriously though, does anyone really want to see a non-comedic Teen Wolf TV series?

Posted by jaime on September 1st, 2009I assume that when Liz says that this will have an American Werewolf in Paris feel, she means that this show will feel like a bad sequel that always shows up in bargain bins for about five bucks. At least MTV doesn’t have any delusions about trying to create anything of quality.
