Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Final Destination Makes a Killing

boxofficeaug31_09

Believe it or not, there was a strong turn out at the box office in the final weekend for the summer season, with The Final Destination coming out victorious in the head to head horror battle against Rob Zombie’s Halloween II. This was largely due to the extra money generated from 3-D ticket sales, which accounted for 70% of its gross. H2 still did okay, making back its $15 million budget and then some, while Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds had a decent second weekend, pulling in another $20 million. District 9 and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra rounded out the top 5. Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, on the other hand, didn’t fare quite so well; it earned just $3.7 million despite playing in over 1300 theatres.

1. The Final Destination — $28.3M
2. Inglourious Basterds — $20M
3. Halloween II — $17.4M
4. District 9 — $10.7M
5. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra — $8M
6. Julie & Julia — $7.4M
7. The Time Traveler’s Wife — $6.75M
8. Shorts — $4.87M
9. Taking Woodstock — $3.75M
10. G-Force — $2.85M

  1. It’s disappointing to see that Ang Lee has fallen out of favor with the general public. I haven’t read any critic reviews, yet, but if ovenball is representative of critical opinion, then maybe I can add Ang Lee to the list of Asian directors who fail in Hollywood.

(I must admit that I was disappointed by Ang Lee’s last film, “Lust, Caution.” I do admire the eclectic nature of the subject matter of his films though.)

  2. the problem wasn’t Ang Lee it was a horrible film choice, scheduling and marketing. I got the sense that no one gave a shit about this Woodstock anniversary.

You nailed it IMO. I couldn’t be less interested in taken woodstock other than the if I was bored and it was on Netflix streaming. FD4 was disappointing and Halloween 2 was one of the worst films I’ve seen in years.

  4. With Final Destination being number one it just prove’s that most American’s are Idiot’s.
