Creators of Delgo Contemplate Legal Action over Avatar Similarities
Last week when James Cameron’s Avatar trailer hit the web, it drew a lot of criticism for the cartoony character designs and the eco-friendly theme… in fact, some people even went so far as to jokingly compare it to the recent animated flop Delgo. Little did they know, that with these humourous remarks they were inadvertently creating a monster.
According to Movieline, the people behind Delgo, Atlanta-based Fathom Studios, recently issued a press release commenting on the similarities between the two movies. What’s more, they even hint that they might be considering a lawsuit! From the press release:
Fathom Studios, the Atlanta-based production company behind Delgo, was bombarded with emails as soon as the Avatar trailer went live. A spokesperson for the studio said, “From what we have seen, we are amazed by the visual similarities between the two films and we are reviewing what legal options may be available to us.”
Do they not realize that everyone else was half-joking, and that the comments being made actually paint Delgo in a negative light? I suppose at this point they’re desperate for any little bit of extra publicity they can get, but they also seem to think it is a genuine accomplishment for a low budget, independent film like Delgo to be compared to Avatar. What do you think, have they got a valid case here, or is this the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever heard? Take another look at the two trailers after the jump.

Delgo was enough of a passion project and a flop that even a negative attention lawsuit is going to help it recoup some dough.
Posted by Goon on August 27th, 2009Some of the still image comparisons of the two films floating around on the internet are so strikingliy similar that it warrants at least a cursory review of “leagl options.”
Yes, both films have terrible CG but I think this goes beyond merely sharing gut wrenchingly, awful, rubber-alien, Jar-Jar Binks’ish, CG.
