Shazam! Movie Gets Another New Writer

By the Elders! SHAZAM! And so, when young Billy Batson says that magical word, two new writers for his ever delayed movie appear!

DC Comics seems reluctant to let the cursed Shazam! flick die, even though the powers that be sure seem to want it to. After the last writer declared the project dead back in January, there – not surprisingly – hasn’t been much progress until now. DC has hired a new writer for the feature about the mighty Captain Marvel, and to ensure that the script gets done this time around, they’ve also attached one of their heavyweights to consult and co-write.

The writer attached is the little known actor Bill Birch, who’s mostly appeared in various TV productions. Birch has now turned to writing instead, and aside from now working on Shazam!, he is also writing the action comedy One Finger Salute, which is going to be directed by Peter Segal (who just so happens to also be attached to direct Shazam!). DC’s consultant is Geoff Johns, who has previously worked on Blade: The Series where he was a producer. Johns is also working on the upcoming DC live-action adaptation of The Flash where he’s tapped to write, as well as the little known Metal Men, where he’s an executive producer.

  1. I can only imagine how difficult it will be to get this movie made – anyone who hears the pitch will automatically assume “Superman rip-off” (and they would be right).

  2. Channing Tatum was born to play this role!

  3. The only reason I want this cheese to come out is get the 70’s live action series on dvd. I think they would release it to cash in….

  4. Not sure about Shazam but is it Captain Marvel? I remember that Superman and him had quite a fight in Justice League Unlimited. Oh how I miss the days of that solid continuous Timm DC universe.

  5. ooooo i’m right there with you Ian. and speaking of batman, i sent an email to filmjunk asking it about a rumor i heard. on foxnews.com they are reporting that the sun times is reporting that Megan Fox has just signed on to play catwoman in the new batman movie along with Christian Bale, and Christopher Nolan directing again. With a release set for 2011.

Is there any truth to this rumor, and are they going to have a better villin then CatWoman, who could easily be both classified as villin and hero?

  6. Captain Marvel is a little kid with a superhuman’s body. The writers will have to exploit that angle to stop this from being a Superman clone. Could be good.

  7. The Megan Fox/Catwoman rumour is total B.S. and was already denied. I’m not sure why so many sites have picked up on it. Well, okay, I know why so many sites have picked up on it.

  8. ok thanks sean. I thought so, i just wanted to make sure. i love this site because I love movies. If it’s not writen as fact on this site, then i don’t trust. You report rumors too, but rumors that are fact.

I knew it wasn’t true right away because they wouldn’t get a girl like megan fox who can barrely act be catwoman in a batman film. But thanks Sean, i’m glad you responded to this.

but i guess i’m confused why so many media outlets are reporting this as fact when it’s so incredibly bogus?

  9. You morons have no clue who captain marvel is, And no captain marvel is not a rip off of superman, because marvel came first. If anything superman is a rip off of marvel. Hailed as “The World’s Mightiest Mortal” in his adventures, Captain Marvel was nicknamed “The Big Red Cheese” by arch-villain Doctor Sivana, an epithet later adopted by Captain Marvel’s fans. Based on sales, Captain Marvel was the most popular superhero of the 1940s, as his Captain Marvel Adventures comic book series sold more copies than Superman and other competing superhero books during the mid-1940s. Captain Marvel was also the first comic book superhero to be adapted to film, in a 1941 Republic Pictures serial (The Adventures of Captain Marvel). The writer of the comic book had a fall out with Dc comics because they wanted to kill the story of captain marvel, becsuse they wanted superman to be the top seller. Because of this Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel-related comics in 1953, due in part to a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics alleging that Captain Marvel was an illegal infringement of Superman. In 1972, DC licensed the Marvel Family characters and returned them to publication, acquiring all rights to the characters by 1991. DC has since integrated Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family into their DC Universe, and have attempted to revive the property several times. However, Captain Marvel has not regained widespread appeal with new generations, although a Shazam! live-action Saturday morning television series featuring the character ran for three seasons on CBS in the 1970s. So ya Marvel was first. Duck on it, superman is gay compared to Marvel.
