James Cameron Goes Back Underwater for Sanctum… in 3-D!

With the fanboys of the world now officially unimpressed and ready to write off James Cameron’s Avatar at a moment’s notice, perhaps they will be able to get themselves excited about another project on Cameron’s plate that is starting to move forward. Sanctum is described as an “underwater survival drama” based on the true story of a group of divers who were trapped for two days in an underwater cave system below Australia’s Nullarbor Plain when the entrance collapsed. Wayfare Entertainment has ponied up $30 million to finance the film, which will be shot in 3-D using the same cameras as Avatar.
James Cameron isn’t directing the project, though, he is only executive producing. Instead, Australian filmmaker Alister Grierson will be taking the reins, with underwater explorer Andrew Wight serving as producer. Wight previously worked with Cameron on his documentaries Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep, and was actually one of the divers who was trapped on that expedition. (He co-wrote the script with John Garvin.) They’re hoping to find a distributor for the film by playing up the District 9 comparison: a $30 million movie from a young filmmaker, overseen by a well-respected veteran with his own special effects facilities. Uh… I guess? Personally, I think it sounds like a cool story, I just don’t see why it needs to be in 3-D. Please tell me James Cameron’s career is not going to follow the same path as Robert Zemeckis!

Cameron seems to be becoming Hollywood’s new 3D wh*re. This stupid fad will surely pass and/or be contained to kids’ movies.
Posted by AlexG on August 24th, 2009Were they in a submersible? I wonder how 3-D would work here? Das Boat in 3-D sounds like it would either be a homerun – pulling the viewer into the cramped, claustrophobic confines of the film…
If they were not in a submersible, I would be curious to know how they survived for two days since nobody brings that much oxygen with them on a normal dive.

Posted by tim on August 25th, 2009I’m not so fussed about the 3D nature of this, rather James Cameron’s incessant and bizarre fascination with the ocean. See
