Youth in Revolt Trailer Starring Michael Cera

Michael Cera haters… prepare to hate on this. The first trailer for the upcoming film Youth in Revolt has arrived online, and it is chock full of Michael Cera’s shy, awkward persona and deadpan comedy. But while some may be quick to write this off as another Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, take note that the book it is based on by C. D. Payne is apparently a little bit darker than that, and a lot funnier too. (Or so I hear.)
Cera plays Nick Twisp (the main character even has the same name!), a slightly nerdy teenager who falls for Sheeni Saunders, the new girl in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, she is looking for someone slightly more rebellious than Nick, so he invents a badass alter-ego named Francois Dillinger. I like how the dual identity concept plays out in the trailer, but something about it still felt a little too “twee” for me. You’ve gotta love the opening appearance by Zach Galifianakis though. Youth in Revolt is directed by Miguel Arteta (The Good Girl) and hits theatres on October 30th. Check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

I wonder what he’s going to be doing 10 years form now. I can see him leaving the comedy film genre in a few years when he and us gets bored of it and taking the leap into more dramatic stuff. Either way it’ll be interesting to see what direction his career takes.
Posted by Marc on August 21st, 2009I also liked the concept, but the way it plays out made me wonder if the alter-ego aspect was at all essential to the story. It seemed like a gimmick, because otherwise it would just be another comedy about a teenage boy bending over backwards to impress a girl. I didn’t laugh at all and some of the jokes had me rolling my eyes. Not interested.

Posted by modesilver on August 22nd, 2009It looks like it will be funny. I wasn’t quite sold until the Francois Dillinger character was introduced. People need to stop hatin’
Posted by J on August 22nd, 2009I don’t see the ‘twee’ness at all once the hook is introduced, I’m definitely up for giving it a chance.
Posted by Goon on August 23rd, 2009The only part that made me laugh was the car going into the water.
Posted by Big Hungry on August 23rd, 2009i like Cera, didn’t think much of Nick and Nora, soundtrack was excellent. I did laugh a lot through the trailer, so fingers crossed
Posted by Ray on August 24th, 2009That was awesome that they used “Timebomb” by Old 97’s at the end of the trailer. great song. As for the movie, I haven’t read the book, but tons of friends have been nagging me about it forever, so now I’m glad I can get this story in 2 hours as opposed to finding the time to read. Regardless of how one-dimensional Cera may be, he’s hilarious in the awkward teen role, and I except another great movie here.
Posted by brett on August 24th, 2009this book is AMAZING. insanely hilarious. i think theyre mainly just focusing on certain aspects from the book for the film but still, if it holds true to the book on any level its sure to be an awesome movie.
