Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman Trailer Starring Benicio Del Toro

Universal’s re-imagining of the classic monster flick The Wolfman has been in development for few years now, with Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) originally attached to direct. After Romanek parted ways due to creative differences, Brett Ratner was rumoured to be taking over the project, but in the end Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III) was named as his replacement. After many delays and a few additional reshoots, a solid release date has finally been set, the first trailer has arrived online!
The movie is set in the the late 1880s and stars Benicio Del Toro as Lawrence Talbot, a man who returns to the English village of Blackmore to investigate the disappearance of his brother. When he is attacked by a werewolf, he becomes cursed and finds himself transforming into a beast as well. I like the look of the film and also the period setting, but I am still not quite sold on the use of CG in some places (FX artist Rick Baker was apparently not happy about the decision to use CG for the transformation). The other question is whether or not it will actually be genuinely scary; it feels like more of a character drama than a horror film, but it does seem fairly faithful to the original. The cast also includes Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving, and apparently Gene Simmons does the voice for The Wolfman himself! The Wolfman hits theatres on February 12th, 2010; check out the trailer after the jump.

Not the best of trailers but I really liked the look of it. The CG transformation looked pretty good, in that small size that is.
Posted by Swarez on August 20th, 2009I think the movie looks absolutly kick ass.
Posted by Slushie Man on August 20th, 2009I am in.
Posted by Big Hungry on August 20th, 2009I think this looks better than Avatar… sorry
Posted by Drew on August 20th, 2009If Romanek had directed this it would have been a must-see, I was quite disappointed they didn’t let him do it, but Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self are two of my favorite screenwriters, so I’ll check it out.
Posted by Henrik on August 20th, 2009I’m in.. although Johnston would not have been my first choice.
Posted by Damndirtyape on August 20th, 2009He wasn’t theirs either.
Posted by Swarez on August 20th, 2009wow i didn’t know A. Hopkins was in it

Posted by modesilver on August 20th, 2009I like the non cheesy Victorian setting that is coming in Sherlock. looks good
Posted by rus in chicago on August 20th, 2009Unless it’s explained why Del Toro’s character does not speak with an English accent, then I’m not sure why he doesn’t speak with one. The transformation looks pretty good, anything better than Van Helsing.
Posted by Maopheus on August 20th, 2009The entire story is shown in the trailer. Guess one has to be in the right mood to enjoy this. Something I might enjoy watching on the telly when it’s cold outside.
Posted by Sly on August 20th, 2009THIS IS WHAT SHERLOCK HOLMES SHOULD LOOK LIKE!
Posted by Billy Boyd Cape on August 20th, 2009If Sherlock Holmes had this dark and evil and gore look. It would be good. Instead Robert Downey Jr has somehow been pushed into another Shanghigh Noon.
I have a feeling that this movie will blow chunks! I think they should have gotten Tim Burton to do this with Jonny Depp.

Yeah, totally! Depp and Burton should just handle ALL the fantastical scripts that come through Hollywood! Shit, maybe they should just stop training directors and actors and just let Burton direct EVERY movie with Depp playing EVERY character in all of them! Women, men, who needs anyone else when ya gots Depp, amiright?!! FUCKIN’ A!
/sarcasm.
Posted by Fatbologna on August 20th, 2009Well it’s not like the story is new and all that complicated. It’s pretty simple:
Posted by Maopheus on August 20th, 20091. Man hunts wolf.
2. Wolf bites man.
3. Man becomes wolf.
4. People hunt wolf-man.
5. Wolf-man fights back.
6. Wolf-man abducts his beloved.
7. Posse seeks wolf-man.
8. Wolf-man gets popped by silver bullet.
9. Roll credits.
Seems to be a homage to American Werewolf In London in this. A double decker bus crash in central London.

Posted by cavecreaturefilms on August 20th, 2009I expected Hugh Jackman to bust in and just lay the Wolfman out. Looks pretty mediocre. But what else do you expect from Joe Johnson?

Posted by David Wilson on August 23rd, 2009@ Swarez – I came online to search this very topic and you know, very few references to this anywhere online. I saw the film tonight and as soon as I saw the double-decker bus crash in London I said to my wife – hey, that’s a nod to American Werewolf in London…I thought it was really obvious – but not mentioned in IMDB fun facts, not mentioned almost anywhere… yours is the first reference to this I found. Weird.
PS – American Werewolf is still the best werewolf film ever made imho….
