Harry Potter Extended Editions in the Works

So you’ve read all the books and seen the first 6 Harry Potter flicks multiple times and you still can’t get enough of the magical world of Hogwarts? Have you ever wondered why they never released Extended Editions of the films on DVD in the same way that Peter Jackson did for The Lord of the Rings trilogy? Surely there are plenty of extra scenes that had to be trimmed or removed in order to get the films to an acceptable theatrical length. Why not give the fans the complete package? Well, you’re in luck my Muggly friends… it looks like longer versions of the Harry Potter films are indeed coming in the very near future.
Rope of Silicon recently spotted a listing in an MPAA Ratings Bulletin for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Extended Edition), and after asking for clarification, they received the following response from Warner Home Video: “Although we’ve not announced [it yet], all Harry Potter films are being planned to get special upcoming releases!”
Further investigation reveals that there are a couple of upcoming Blu-ray releases for the first two Harry Potter movies labelled as Ultimate Editions. Although they don’t have release dates yet, it seems that these are probably connected. One question that remains unanswered, however, is whether or not they will be re-releasing these extended editions in theatres. I think this may partially depend on how much new footage is added, although either way I can definitely see them organizing some sort of theatrical marathon before the final movie is released. Do you feel the need for more Potter? Would you pay to see the Harry Potter series all over again?

I haven’t bought any of the HP yet, so I’ll probably wait and spend a billion $$$ on a HP 1-7 (.. or 1-8 since 7 is split?) ultimate bluray extended ultra magical set when it inevitably comes out.

Posted by moviefans.de on August 14th, 2009Ive been waiting to buy the first 4 on Bluray because I figured they would release some form of special editions before the series in completed, so I’ll just trade my DVD’s in and happily buy these. Hopefully 3 and 4 follow soon because those are my favorites.
Posted by Justice on August 14th, 2009If they are like the lord of the rings versions yes. That is the only movies I have seen where the extended versions are totally different and better. It was like watching a whole new movie.
