Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race Getting the Prequel You Didn’t Ask For

Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race remake didn’t exactly blow open the box office last summer; with a production budget of $45 million, it grossed just $36 million domestically (although it ultimately made its money back on the foreign market). Not necessarily a great starting point for a franchise, but hey, these are desperate times, and so Paul W.S. Anderson has reportedly started development on a prequel. Tony Giglio (Chaos, Timber Falls, Soccer Dog: The Movie) will write the script based on a story idea by Anderson, and may also direct as well.

The prequel will focus on the back story of the masked driver Frankenstein, who was played by Jason Statham. However, since Frankenstein is essentially a persona that can be taken on by anyone wearing the mask, I am guessing they’re referring to the origin of the “legend” rather than Statham’s character specifically. In the opening of the film, Frankenstein is actually played by David Carradine, who also starred in the Roger Corman original. Seeing as Carradine passed away earlier this year, I don’t think he’ll be back either. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for them to cast a WWE wrestler or UFC fighter in the lead role!

There’s a part of me that wouldn’t mind seeing the post-apocalyptic future from Death Race explored a little more, but something tells me that’s the last thing they’re thinking about here. In my opinion, this is a direct-to-DVD feature at best, but maybe with the right star, it could be a hit. What do you think, would you pay to see a Death Race prequel?

  2. Maybe

  3. Anything that keeps Paul WS Anderson away from other properties is a good thing.

  4. Haha… good call.

  5. This sounds like a horrible idea….I’m not even trying to entertain the notion.

That being said…there is a market for this kind of shit. You know who you are….people who think Steve Austin is the next great action star.

  6. You leave ‘Stone Cold’ alone. He’s done nothing wrong.

  7. Anderson RULES!!!!!
    Eat it bitches!!!!

  8. 1st Death Race was very tame due to pg13 rating, maybe they have extra footage that they’ll splice together to make this ‘prequel’.

  9. Apparently Death Race was R rated according to IMDB, seemed like it should have been PG-13 with the lack or gore etc.

  10. I can see hating on a film after seeing it or at least some clips, but wow. DR was cool. Not a masterpiece. But cool. Maybe a prequel about Frank could be cool. We all know he gets royally f’d up right? No happy endings.

  11. I thought the remake was a badass flick; and I know that
anyone who is a fan of the Twisted metal games felt the same way. As long as there are going ta be armored up fast cars with guns hooked on um, I’m down (weather it be straight ta dvd or not.) I personally don’t see why the remake didn’t do all that well in the theaters. I haven’t ejoyed a movie like that since,
    The Road Warrior.

  13. Ya, I don’t get why you guys keep trashing the remake.
It was a great 80’s throwback, almost completely practical car stunts, action you could follow, quite a bit of violence, a very streamlined story without any boring filler. It’s by FAR Anderson’s best movie, and honestly, if it was the same movie but his name wasn’t on it, I bet there’d be way more support for it. I think it’s just trendy to trash him now and everyone jumps on the band-wagon without giving it a fair shake.

  14. “Channing Tatum” was born to play this role!!

  15. Channing Tatum was born to suck shit.
