Frank Darabont to Direct The Walking Dead Series for AMC

So you thought zombies had been replaced by vampires as the new horror creature of choice? Think again. AMC has just landed a pretty major zombie property to be adapted as a TV series, along with some big name talent to make it happen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist) has signed on to write, direct and executive produce an adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic book series for the small screen. If you don’t think this is big news, then you clearly don’t know any hardcore zombie fans!
Just about every horror fan I know is a fan of this series, which follows a group of survivors amidst a zombie apocalypse. While I’ve only read the first hardcover collection myself, I can definitely vouch for its addictiveness. I’ve been wondering for a while now why we haven’t seen a decent zombie-centric TV series, and now with AMC striving to compete with HBO and Showtime for original programming, they are certainly going to attract a lot of viewers here. Add this to the critically acclaimed shows Mad Men and Breaking Bad, plus their upcoming remake of The Prisoner, and they’re starting to develop a pretty solid line-up… dare I say, better even than what HBO has at the moment. No word yet on when the show would premiere, but I’m guessing at least next summer, if not the fall. Are you excited to see The Walking Dead as a TV series on AMC, or are you, like, so over zombies?

Posted by Julien on August 12th, 2009Just the fact that they are making a TV-series out of this incredible comic is insane! Throw in Frank Darabont and I’m ecstatic!
more proof cable TV has replaced the movies as the place for serious entertainment drama
Posted by rus in chicago on August 12th, 2009I don’t think I have ever cried so much in my life. I really feel that this is one of the best graphic novels, and it rightly deserves a live-action interpretation.
Posted by Marcus on August 12th, 2009It’s good to hear that this will be a television series and not a movie. There is so much content that a movie would barely even scratch the surface.
Posted by Shawn on August 12th, 2009Throwin’ my hat in with the “this could be very fucking cool indeed” lot.
Posted by Dave on August 12th, 2009This could be great. I hope they take liberties with the dialogue, though.

Posted by Mike on August 12th, 2009I think that visually, the camera work should resemble Band of Brothers; grainy with a lot of “dirt” and muted colours.
Speaking of that show, what about this guy for the lead? (on left, for get actor’s name)

Posted by Phil on August 13th, 2009If the ratings drop will they introduce a cute kid zombie? I’m up to date with the series as far as the trades go and def think a t.v. series will be a better format opposed to just another zombie movie. Y-The Last Man should also go this route. This also makes me wonder whatever happened to the Preacher t.v. series/movie that was in the works.
Posted by ToeFu on August 13th, 2009I was just talking to a fellow comic fan the other day about comics that I’d like to see adapted and The Walking Dead came up and I mentioned that I’d love to see it as a cable TV series. Throw Darabont into the mix and this should be awesome.
Posted by Ben on August 13th, 2009Oh my God, AMC…you better buy whoever landed you this big comic fish a nice car. Because you just struck gold if its done right.
Seriously, excellent choice!
