Monday Morning Box Office Report: G.I. Joe Granted Reprieve

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra fought bad buzz and unfavourable reviews this past weekend to earn a relatively “heroic” opening, racking up a decent $56 million take. It’s still a far cry from some of the year’s bigger openings like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine or even Fast & Furious, but it wasn’t a sequel and didn’t have an A-list cast. Julie & Julia was #2 with $20 million, followed by G-Force and Harry Potter 6, while Judd Apatow’s Funny People dropped all the way to #5 in one week. Elsewhere, indie dramedy (500) Days of Summer showed up in the top 10 for the first time after expanding to over 800 theatres, finally knocking The Hangover off the charts for the first time since it opened back at the beginning of June.
