Monday Morning Box Office Report: Funny People Fizzles

Judd Apatow’s Funny People may have come out on top this weekend, but it certainly underperformed, grossing significantly less than his previous film Knocked Up despite the presence of both Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. It certainly won’t be catching The Hangover or even Paul Blart: Mall Cop as one of the year’s top comedies, with general audience apathy likely resulting from the dramatic elements of the storyline, Hollywood inside baseball and lack of a simple premise to sell the film. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince just barely remained at #2 with $17.7 million, while G-Force fell to #3. The Ugly Truth dropped to #4, while Aliens in the Attic debuted in the top 5 with a $7.8 million opening. The weekend’s other new release, The Collector, was just off the top 10 after earning $3.6 million on over 1300 screens.

funny people was amazing. it was hillarious. he only complaint i have is that it was way way way too long
Posted by rick on August 3rd, 2009yeah, it was great, i think the length is probably the reason it didn’t bring more people in …
Posted by Joel on August 3rd, 2009I enjoyed most of Funny People, but it’s certainly my least favorite Apatow flick.
Posted by RJ on August 3rd, 2009I liked Funny People quite a bit, though have to echo the length complaints. The parts at Leslie Mann’s house seemed particularly flat compared with the rest of the film…
It was actually still my favorite of Apatow’s films. I was never a big fan of “Knocked Up” or “40 Year-Old Virgin.”
Posted by Colin on August 3rd, 2009I was really underwhelmed by “Funny People.” It was extremely self-indulgent (look how cute my kids are & look how hot my wife’s ass looks in tight jeans!). The moment we got to Leslie Mann’s house – I completely tuned out and stopped caring about Sandler’s plight. I wanted to love this movie, but it was mediocre at best. Laughed a few times, but not as much, and didn’t find the drama to be all that realistic or remotely moving.
James Taylor was quite funny, with the two lines he had.
