Free Preview of James Cameron’s Avatar Coming to IMAX Theatres in August
![]()
Some lucky folks at the San Diego Comic Con this week were among the first audiences to see footage from James Cameron’s highly-anticipated sci-fi film Avatar (not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender). Approximately 25 minutes of 3-D footage screened yesterday, showing off an unparalleled marriage between CG and motion capture technology including an action sequence where Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana fight a group of alien creatures in a jungle. Reactions seem to be very positive, raving over the detail in the CG and the fluidity of the animation, but stopping just short of a creating a complete shift in the medium.
So here’s the good news: you too will be able to check out a preview of Avatar before the end of the summer, and it won’t be in the form of a simple trailer either. Fox is going all out to create hype for the film by proclaiming Friday, August 21st to be “Avatar Day”, where as many IMAX and digital 3-D theatres as possible around the world will screen a 15 minute preview of the movie — absolutely free of charge. What a great idea. This will guarantee that people see it for the first time in an optimal environment, and after giving them a little taste of the magic, they’ll be sure to come back for more. So be sure to mark August 21st on your calendars, kiddies… do you think Avatar will deliver the goods?

This really irritates me. For a movie that comes out in less than 5 months, you’d think they can show the general public (those non fanboys who weren’t able to drive all the way to comic con)an actual picture or two. And after this build up, there is still no trailer!
Posted by Ken on July 24th, 2009the design I’m seeing is weak – Cameron seems to get stuck on certain engineering ideas and repeats himself. at least Lucas would play around with different ideas and concepts and that was in one film franchise. There appears to be concepts here repeated from aliens and terminator concepts.

Posted by Matt Keith on July 24th, 2009I have to admit that, like rus in chicago, I also think the design is weak. That style of mech design was good for the Power Loader; but today its generic. Hopefully that preview comes near my city so I can really see whats up.

Posted by jaime on July 25th, 2009Damn, I hope I get to see it, thats the last day at summer camp. I’ll be going for 4 days. I hope they have it the following day. I hate camp now!!!
Posted by John on July 26th, 2009I do not think Avatar will be as good as they say. I think the CGI will still look CGI and I’m not sure this will hit as big as the studio hopes. But I can be proven wrong and I hope to be proven wrong.
Posted by Big Hungry on July 26th, 2009The response from Comic Con wasn’t as fantastic as people thought it would be. I guess the hype was too much. People were saying that the CGI in District 9 was better than this.
As for the designs. Cameron designs things that might actually work and doesn’t go balls out to fantasy land like Lucas and co.
Posted by Swarez on July 26th, 2009So far, I’m not impressed. I’m not a big fan of let’s keep it secret until the last second plan. I can think of quite a few movies that suffered from that. As for the “I am going to blow your minds kiddies” thing… I think not. Just by saying that this will revolutionize everything and you will rue the day that you didn’t see it, sleeping in tents for 5 weeks prior to the midnight opening. That just makes me want to hate it. As for the reviews. Lest we forget that he debuted this in front of a sea of fanboys hoping for another Terminator. Cameron is capable of fantastic work. He is also capable of believing his own hype.
