Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Teaser Trailer
Attached to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theatres this week is the teaser trailer for a brand new fantasy film franchise called Percy Jackson & The Olympians. I hadn’t even heard of this young adult series until now, but the premise sounds pretty cool even if the teaser trailer doesn’t show much worth getting excited about (yet). Written by Rick Riordan, the Percy Jackson books are about a 12-year-old boy who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, and that the gods of Greek mythology still exist today.
The first book is called The Lightning Thief and the movie is directed by Chris Columbus, who of course did the first two Harry Potter flicks. Clearly they’re hoping this series will be able to carry on in place of the Harry Potter franchise once it wraps up. Thus far there are five main books in the series plus two spin-off titles, which should make for a decent cash cow for the next 10 years or so (assuming they don’t mess it up like The Golden Compass or Eragon). It should also provide an interesting counterpoint to the upcoming remake of The Clash of the Titans. The movies will star Logan Lerman (Hoot) in the lead role, with appearances from Kevin McKidd (Poseidon), Rosario Dawson (Persephone), Uma Thurman (Medusa), Pierce Brosnan (Chiron), Sean Bean (Zeus), Steve Coogan (Hades) and Catherine Keener as Percy’s mother. The first film hits theatres on February 12th, 2010; check out the teaser trailer after the jump.

The books are a fantastic read for kids and adults. I highly recommend them. Even my 17 year old, who is a very precocious reader, loves them! I was very excited to see the trailer and that Chris Columbus is directing. It’s a different concept and not just a copy cat of Harry Potter. Looking forward to the release!

I mean since when does mount olympus look GOTHIC!?!? I MEAN I UNDERSTAND THAT WOULD BE HOW THE UNDERWORLD MIGHT LOOK BUT REALLY?! MOUNT OLYMPUS?!?!? MOUNT OLYMPUS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HAPPY PLACE NOT GOTHIC. This movie, like the harry potter movies, will surely disapoint when compared to the amazing writing in the book.

When I say the first part of the trailer and he’s just walking very slowly, I’m thinking, what’s going on? There wasn’t a dramatic walking scene in the book! And then I saw that it was from the director of Harry Potter and I was like, “Oh, gosh, this movie is gonna be screwed up.” Don’t get me wrong, I loved the books both Rick Riordan and JK Rowling are both great authors! I love them! but the director adds stuff that wasn’t there and cuts stuff out! And then the symbol in the elevator: The Greek one. WTH? How would people not notice that! Ayone could go to Mt Olympus! When I say Mt Olympus, though, I was pissed because how is Mt Olympus gothic?! I mean I get the underworld, but Mt Olympus!? I saw the cast and it’s terribe! The people are to old! Grover is a 30 year old rapper! I know hes 28 but hes supposed to look 12! Everyone else is 18 playing 12 year olds! Get the right age! Im gonna see this movie to see how much it sux compares to the books!I hope the director is seeing this because I have something to say!: U suk get a new job! I absolutely love and adore Rick Riordan’s books because theyre fantastic and great and I dont want them screwed up by a director that doesnt give 2 cents about fans of the book! Anyways the point is LUV <3 <3 the books but I’m gonna hate the movie!!!! X(

I agree with all of you… and he only goes to Mt. Olympus at the very end with the bolt… and i looked… Annabeth isn’t blonde and is 23! How wrong…. And no offense… but who said Grover was black… I’m going to see the movie… just to compare but so far… not so good.

I half agree with rose and half agree with everybody else.maybe three-quarters with rose. i am going to see it, but come on! someones gotta talk some sense into that director! he cant leave out half the scenes and add new ones! we shold do something!

Posted by johnny on January 3rd, 2010I agree with Johnny. The movies are, quite frankly, a wrong turn. I may see the movie, but I don’t have much hope in it. The cast is too old, for example. At the start of the series, Percy is twelve. He is not sixteen. If you read the series, as I have, you will note that age is an important factor, because of a certain prophesy that has much to do with a demigod’s age. This is a key factor in the series. Also, I don’t agree with the casting. Alexandra Daddario, the actress playing Annabeth, is twenty-three years old. Twenty-three.

This movie is going to be an absolute fail they made meddusa into a hooker ,I have nothing aggenst black pepole but when I think of grover I think of A wimpy white boy ,Annabeth has brown hair and she seems so depressed ,dont get me started about percy,Ms.Dodds is to young and turns into a mouth? Where does the hydra come from isn he smaller and wimpyer in the 2cnd book?

But when the movie comes out it shatters that and makes us think thats what they look like and for the lucky pepole who still see the natural character as they want to good for you but this movies bad news…
