Sixth Sense – pretty sure there is no “before” as Jay puts it. Bruce (haha probably his character has a name who cares) only experiences what the audience sees, and his dead brain fills in the gaps to stop him thinking about it too much. Like watching a movie!

The strikebreaker from Harlan County USA is a scary-ass MOFO and The Friedman sons (and father) from Capturing the Friedmans are pretty damn creepy too.

Poor Louie.. Arnold just batted him around like a toy. The ultimate Alpha Male.

BTW, The Alien Quadrilogy box set has great commentaries and behind the scenes stuff.

My favorite documentary villain is Arnold Schwarzenegger in Pumping Iron!

Commentaries that are good: Fight Club. Any Verhoeven or Carpenter. Danny Elfman on Edward Scissorhands and Planet of the Apes is worth buying the DVDs for.

yeah, on the Sixth Sense issue, any concept movie fights the battle of explaining/justifying versus entertaining. In the process of making this movie Night had to choose where to draw the line, if he didn’t believe he could pull off this version of LIMBO the project would have probably not made it to production. That knife edge is what makes screenwriting and filmmaking so hard and what is interesting about Night’s earlier work is he was very adept at pulling this off. I agree that Bruce’s character is in Shama-lama-ding-dong type limbo between heaven and hell that has a certain set of rules to support the film. You could say that some of those rules are also on display in the kid’s world as he doesn’t see dead people all the time, or at least it appears in the construction of the film he doesn’t see them all the time.

In a way this very issue is why Reed can’t see the possibilities in District 9 and other films like Star Trek – he doesn’t allow himself to experience the film before analyzing it. What a very sad way to go through life

Forgot to add – As far as Bruce Willis not realizing he was dead, I always took it to mean that after he died he existed in a surreal twilight state that was not fully in sync with the “real” world.

His consciousness could not fully admit to himself that he has passed on so he existed in a state of denial to the facts and clues about his true condition.

I agree 100 percent with the superhero villain thing.. very boring and pointless to see a superhero fight a more powerful version of themselves.. Asymmetrical combat is way more fun.. unless it’s Hulk vs the Thing
