New To Theatres This Weekend: Bruno, I Love You Beth Cooper, Humpday

moviesjuly10_09

It’s a battle between two comedies this weekend at the box office, although neither of them will probably have enough pull to beat Ice Age 3 or Transformers 2. In one corner, Sacha Baron Cohen and his latest real-world comedy Bruno, and in the other corner, Heroes star Hayden Panettiere and the teen sex comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper. In select theatres you can also find the Sundance hit Humpday, the live-action adaptation of the anime Blood: The Last Vampire, and the documentary Soul Power. Do you think Bruno will be more successful than Borat? What will you be checking out this weekend?

  1. Finally, ‘The Hurt Locker’ comes back to Toronto.

  2. I’ve heard from many friends in LA that The Hurt Locker is the best film of the year. Looking forward to supporting it this weekend.

  3. Saw Bruno this morning. Disappointing but passable, I mean I laughed plenty enough but unlike Borat it’s lacking any simple clear A to B plot structure to carry this character through the adventures.

It’s a weird case where I’m enjoying whats happening on screen as it happens, but I’m also realizing I’m getting tired of it before its over, and that I’m not really invested in anything or looking forward to where its going.

  4. Saw Bruno thursday. It was awesome. Much better than Borat. I hope this will be the big winner of this weeks new releases.

  5. The Hurt Locker is fuckin awesome, I really hope it does well..it kinda took a route in the middle that brought me out of it a little bit but it comes back strong and on the whole it´s fantastic..best movie I´ve seen this year, had it for months before watching it then the poster and trailer came up and spiked my interest again..Pissed that I didn´t watch it sooner

  6. i’ve never even heard of the hurt locker, but i really wanna see it after hearing you all rave about it. Has anyone seen beth cooper. i’d like to know what you think about that.

  7. A last minute edition of The Hurt Locker to my local indie theater has been fantastic and welcome. Im going to check that out as well as Bruno and Moon. What are everyone’s thoughts on Moon?

  8. Moon was decent, we reviewed it at Sundance earlier this year:

I should have a review of The Hurt Locker up sometime this weekend.

I think you can watch a couple of minutes of THL over at hd-trailers.net..God, the opening is intense

  10. Humpday was terrible! It looks awful and the ending is so unfulfilling. I can’t understand why it’s considered the Sundance “darling”…
