Let The Right One In Director to Adapt John Le Carré Spy Novel

As we all await the dreaded Matt Reeves-directed remake of Let The Right One In, it’s nice to see that the director of the original, Tomas Alfredson, is starting to get a lot of cool opportunities thrown his way. His next project is currently being lined up over at Working Title Films, and it is an adaptation of the John Le Carré spy novel, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The film will be Alfredson’s first English-language picture, with a screenplay written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), who was also recently hired to pen the next James Bond movie.

While a cold war thriller is not necessarily what I would have expected from Tomas Alfredson, the truth is I know next to nothing about his filmography prior to Let The Right One In. He is apparently excited to work with Morgan and producer Tim Bevan, calling the project both “satisfactory and uplifting” (gotta love that wording). Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy revolves around a retired British agent who is called back to service in order to track down a Russian double agent. It was previously adapted as a BAFTA-winning and Emmy nominated TV series, starring Alec Guinness in 1979. Spies are back in a big way, but you can bet a lot of eyes will be on Alfredson to see if he can deliver another critical hit — without the vampire.

  1. This is very intriguing news. I absolutely loved the miniseries with Alec Guinness, but they had 6 or 7 episodes to really get into everything. Id be interested to see how it runs as a 2 hour movie. The 2nd miniseries the made called Smiley’s People was even better in my opinion. There is a 20 second non speaking cameo from Patrick Stewart at the end of the last episode of Smiley’s People, Reed should really add that to the collection.
