Justin Timberlake is a Frontrunner to Play The Green Lantern

Well it might sound like one of those crazy internet rumours that exists solely to incur the wrath of fanboys, but alas, there is apparently more than a grain of truth to this one. It seems that Warner Brothers are getting closer to naming the lead actor for Martin Campbell’s upcoming Green Lantern movie, and they’ve essentially narrowed the field down to three choices. One of the choices is someone we’ve previously heard about: Bradley Cooper. The other two are a little more surprising.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, they are also considering Ryan Reynolds for the role, despite the fact that he is looking likely to star in a Deadpool spin-off movie at some point as well. The third frontrunner is the one that seems to have a lot of people pretty upset: Justin Timberlake. The former ‘N Sync member not only screen tested for the role, but apparently did so well that he now has a serious shot at donning the green tights.
Wow, Justin Timberlake? Really? I do actually think the guy has some acting talent after his performances in Alpha Dog, Southland Tales and Black Snake Moan (let’s just leave The Love Guru out of this). But it should be pretty obvious that if you cast a pop star as the lead of a comic book movie, you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle against the fans. He’d have to be pretty damn amazing in that role to win people over. Who do you think is the best choice? Can you actually see JT as Hal Jordan?

probably bribed one of the suits by giving them something in a BOX!
oh yeah, still got it, still got it, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Posted by rus in chicago on July 10th, 2009this might go both ways. as sean pointed out, Timberlake’s gotta deliver one hell of a performance to win people over.
i personally will be disappointed if he gets the role. he’s too much of a pretty-boy to play this character.
Posted by modesilver on July 10th, 2009They might as well get 50 Cent to play the villian and get Brett Ratner to direct, and this could be one of the worst comic book films since “Batman and Robin”.
Posted by Matt Keith on July 10th, 2009I just puked up green stuff everywhere!!!!!!!!!!
JT really??????????????
I would rather see Reed get the main role, if they head that direction.
Posted by Big Hungry on July 10th, 2009I think Timberlake is a fine actor and if he is one of the serious contenders, I’m sure its because he has done a good job auditioning. I doubt they’d just hand the role over to him. Im sure he’d earn it.
Ive liked him quite a bit in Alpha Dog and found him to be pretty good for the little bit he was in Black Snake Moan. Im not a fan of his music but I’ll keep an open mind. If he wasnt a pop singer, fandom wouldnt have an issue with this.
Posted by Captain N on July 10th, 2009Ha ha. I’d better start bulking up now in case they hold another set of auditions. I’ve always needed an excuse to get motivated in developing washboard abs. I might be more suited to play a non-speaking henchman/servant role, though.
Posted by Reed Farrington on July 10th, 2009i’m not a green lantern guy by any means. more of a bat man guy. But even I think this is rediculous. You can’t cast Justin. Yeah he has the acting ability but put him in a few other movies with some bigger rolls before rolling out the red carpet to being the star in a comic action flick. I’d actually like to see bradley cooper as the GL. But I also agree with Cap N. If he gets it he probably earned it.
Posted by Rick on July 10th, 2009They really seem to be going fairly young for this role. I’ve never been a huge Hal Jordan fan, but I’ve always pictured him as much older then what they are looking to cast. Michael Keaton would fit my ideal more then any of these guys.
Posted by Matt Gamble on July 10th, 2009JT doesn’t seem like he could be gruff enough to be Hal Jordan. He might be an ok Guy Gardner though.
Am I the only comic fan who hopes they go for a Jordan/Stewart/Gardner/Rayner ensemble?
Posted by Ryan M. on July 10th, 2009I’ve heard of some pretty odd casting choices over the years, a few have surprised me by being actually good (Iron Man for example, best superhero movie to date). But so far, JT as Green Lantern is the single stupidest one yet! He can’t act, period! He doesn’t even look the part, come on! Anyone else could do it so much better. If this goes through, I will not watch this movie, ever!
Posted by Danny Sanborn on July 10th, 2009One more thing, Martin Campbell, have you even read a Green Lantern comic?
if I had to pick one from that lot it would definitely be Cooper..can´t stand the other two..but it should be Nathan Fillion, I´m just ashamed that I didn´t think of him before the fan trailer..love Fillion..but I would be happy to see Brian Austin Green as Lanter also, he was awesome on TSCC
Posted by pcch7 on July 10th, 2009I’m fine with this. He’s not the worlds worst actor and I think he has a little more charisma than Bradley Cooper (who must have a fantastic agent). As long as it’s not some overlong boring ass origin movie then I’m ok with it. Just some dude in a suit doing crazy shit.
This is going to be an overlong overblown origin story isn’t it?
Another one.
If it makes enough money I’ll watch the sequel.
Posted by sitromdrol on July 10th, 2009Justin Timberlake??? Is this a joke!? Man, does Warner Bros even take this stuff seriously??? It’s going to turn out the same way Steel did with Shaq, It can’t be takin seriously. Please cast Cooper. Give this guy some action limelight with a hero role. Lets try avoiding these ‘N sync songs throughout the film…
Dammit Campbell why didn’t you just cast Timberlake as James Bond?
Posted by Davis on July 10th, 2009The best of the 3 is Ryan Reynolds, but he’s already Deadpool and a potential movie for that AND I read everywhere that he’s the top contender to play The Flash. He probably would have got the Batman gig too if Christian Bale wasn’t around.
Have to wait and see what they do.
Posted by Mike on July 10th, 2009I agree with you danny. However, when it comes to the best super-hero movie, it’s not even a competition. THE DARK KNIGHT!!!
Posted by Rick on July 11th, 2009Well, he’s better than Jack Black. I think he may have some acting ability, but he doesn’t seem to have the stature to be GL.
Then, you look at how Batman turned out with Michael Keaton…and Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr.
I’ll keep an open mind. Just start making the movie.
