Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s Cemetery Junction Teaser Trailer

A couple of weeks back, we saw the first trailer for The Invention of Lying, the newest film starring British comedian Ricky Gervais, and also the first movie he had a hand in writing and directing himself. While it did seem promising, the trailer itself wasn’t exactly laugh out loud hilarious. Well now this week we’ve already got the first official teaser trailer for Gervais’s next film Cemetery Junction, which he is co-writing and co-directing with The Office co-creator Stephen Merchant. And guess what? This one actually is laugh out loud funny!
The thing is, the teaser contains no footage from the movie whatsoever. It’s just a short clip with Gervais and Merchant talking to the camera and introducing one of the film’s stars, Ralph Fiennes. It really is not a reliable gauge for the film at all, but it does at least remind us that Gervais is reteaming with Merchant, which is something worth getting excited about. The movie is about a group of three men working at an insurance company in the 1970s, so clearly it’s familiar territory for them. Check out the teaser after the jump and see what you think. Cemetery Junction is scheduled for release in 2010; you can keep up to date on the production via Ricky’s blog.

I’ve yet to have even a twitch of a smile over Ricky Gervais. Comedy may be the most subjective genre ever; but almost no level of objectivity makes me see any LOL moments.
Posted by Ryan M. on July 9th, 2009I LOLed. And I don’t use that term lightly.
Posted by Brett on July 9th, 2009When i first tried to play this it said “invalid parameters.” I think that has to be the scariest way to tell me I cannot watch a video.
Made me laugh but I am not sure just from this teaser if I really want to see it. Merchant and Gervais do have a brilliant track record, however.
Posted by CastleKnight on July 9th, 2009I thought Ralph Fiennes was very funny in In Bruges. I’m interested in seeing him in more comedic roles. And Merchant and Gervais have never given me any reason to doubt their combined abilities.
I am intrigued.
Posted by James on July 9th, 2009Ah yes, awkward comedy. I did get a good chuckle.. not a total LOL, but a slight ‘hehehe’.
Posted by dunk on July 9th, 2009I love this
Posted by Henrik on July 9th, 2009I have The Office and Extras on my DVD shelf, so I’m pretty much in line for this already.
That said, the “cringe comedy” aspect in the trailer feels a little forced, with Gervais doing that thing he does and almost mugging for the camera. I’m so in awe of the brilliance of these guys’ writing and performance that I’d hate to see it become just another shtick.
