Big Fan Trailer Starring Patton Oswalt

After writing the script for Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, Robert Siegel makes his directorial debut with Big Fan, a dark character study about an obsessed football fan who gets beaten up by his favourite player. This is a movie I’ve been really looking forward to, and I was completely bummed that we weren’t able to catch it at Sundance earlier this year. Fortunately, it was picked up for distribution by First Independent Pictures, and they will be releasing it in select theatres next month.
The first trailer has arrived online this week and I think it looks pretty intriguing. The movie stars Patton Oswalt in the lead role, and he has been getting a lot of praise for his performance. Obviously with Oswalt there is an expectation for it to be a comedy, but as the trailer indicates there is very little humour here at all. The supporting cast also includes Kevin Corrigan and Michael Rapaport, who also seem to be a perfect fit. Hey, if it’s even half as good as The Wrestler, it will still be a solid film, right? In the meantime, I’m starting to feel the urge to revisit Tony Scott’s The Fan on DVD! Big Fan hits theatres on August 28th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

The only thing wrong with this trailer is that it’s the fucking guy from The King of Queens in the role.
Posted by Henrik on July 7th, 2009Why is that a problem? I like Patton Oswalt and it seems like he is doing a good job in this movie.
Posted by Kasper F. Nielsen on July 7th, 2009wrong Henrik, Patton is the draw. He’s the best standup working today.
Posted by Goon on July 7th, 2009I heart Patton
Posted by Nicole on July 7th, 2009I also heart Patton. His stand-up comedy. His performance in Ratatouille. This looks great too.
Posted by Glendon on July 7th, 2009patton’s the shiz
Posted by Mike on July 7th, 2009He might be a great standupper, but this movie definitely does NOT need a standupper/guest star on King of Queens to be distracting in the lead. I’m not saying he’s bad at what he does as a comedian, but it’s awfully distracting in a film like this, it makes it seem more ironic and distanced.
Posted by Henrik on July 7th, 2009you’re just prejudging because your only exposure to him is from voicing a kids film and from a paycheck tv show.
you’re also watching a trailer and deciding that a performance is ‘distanced’ whereas a film is going to set a mood and build on something.

Strong review from Cinemablend’s Josh Tyler.
Posted by Goon on July 7th, 2009It will be hard not to watch this and think, oh it’s that fat guy from that crappy tv show who squints a lot.
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on July 7th, 2009Based on these comments, I really hope this is a breakout role for Patton. He’s quite awesome.
Posted by mrbenning on July 7th, 2009its your guys own fault for actually watching King of Queens instead of Comedians of Comedy.
Posted by Goon on July 7th, 2009Well KoQ was exported to Danmark, the other thing wasn’t.
I was always talking about the trailer Goon. I am not talking about the movie, since I haven’t seen it yet.
Posted by Henrik on July 7th, 2009I’m sure someone would just call ’semantics’ on us again –
but to me when you say “the problem with the trailer is X is in the role” I assume you also mean its a crit of the movie, because to me when you’re critting who’s in the role, that extends beyond the trailer.

QFT.
If you only know Patton from King of Queens its an indictment on you, not him.
Posted by Matt Gamble on July 7th, 2009Well, I am not counting out the possibility that in the movie, maybe it won’t be a problem with me. Maybe I will buy into it completely, and think of Oswalt differently, but in this trailer, I couldn’t get away from it. He even works in the same place as in the show!
Posted by Henrik on July 7th, 2009Ah come on.. King of Queens is great.. after Seinfeld it’s my favorite TV comedy.
Patton was comedy gold on that show: The geeky-nerd stuff he was into reminds me a lot of my co-workers in the game/film industry. The episode where he wanted to go to a Dark Shadows convention in his Barnabas Collins costume was hilarious, as was the episode where he camped out in line before the premier of “The Legend of Grun” I worked around tons of guys like Spence Olchen and see him in them. Try going to Comic-Con or E3 and the place is crawling with meek and socially akward Spence Olchens.
I hope he gets very famous from this because I find him a lot funnier than most of the popular comedy brat-pack guys I see popping up in the same films again and again
Posted by Damndirtyape on July 7th, 2009Henrik, you’re a smart guy, but concerning the subject of Patton…you are a fucking ignorant asshole.
I’ve been a die hard fan of patton for years, and have never once seen an episode of King of Queens, and I intend to keep it that way. Even Patton has publically admitted it was a paycheck and it was mediocre. I should know, I’ve met him. You can even see me in the front row of one of his stand-up dvds. I’m a big fan.
Posted by Bob The Slob on July 8th, 2009For someone with no sense of humor, let me say that I am a fan of The King of Queens. After so many years on the air, that show never got any respect or recognition. I haven’t seen “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” yet, but I’m happy that it was a big success for Kevin James.
Has Jay already told the story on a Film Junk podcast about sitting in front of Patton Oswalt in a movie theatre?
Posted by Reed Farrington on July 8th, 2009An ignorant asshole? For somebody who doesn’t seek out stand-up comedy, since I am not that much of a fan, I think it’s quite normal to have been exposed to this through King of Queens and Ratatouille only. I’m sorry that I have not gone to america to watch him perform live, I’m sure he’s a nice guy Bob. Are you friends with all the celebrities you meet/pay money to sit near?
It’s a paycheck sure, but it’s what makes him known. Saying that you should not be judged by what you just did for the money is hypocritical. Of course you should, and if you don’t want to be, you should be less greedy.
As it stands, this guy is a loser like in the show, works in the same place, yells at his mom etc. I thik the trailer is deliberately trying to remind us that this is the funny guy from a popular TV show, like I said maybe the movie will work better (or, for fans of his King of Queens work, worse).
Posted by Henrik on July 8th, 2009No one has mentioned his supporting roles in The United States of Tara and Observe & Report. He’s also in Soderbergh’s The Informant. He’s clearly more than just a comedian, and I think this will be the movie that proves it.
Posted by Sean on July 8th, 2009didnt his character on King of queens have the exact same job as the his character in Big Fan?
Posted by Hannes on July 8th, 2009he was working in a toll both for the SUBWAY in KOQ, CLEARLY a whole diffrent ball game..
Posted by Niklas on July 14th, 2009Henrik doesn’t realize that when he admitted that he only knows Patton from King of Queens, he lost all credibility right there. It’s like saying you could never watch the Sopranos because it stars James Gandolfini, the guy from Surviving Christmas. Sorry asshole, but the joke is on you. Nobody cares what you think.
