Tim Minear Heading Up Alien Nation Remake

In what appears to be a direct response to Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 and ABC’s upcoming V remake, Sci Fi Channel (who are officially changing their name to SyFy as of next week) have unveiled plans for a remake of another Kenneth Johnson TV series: Alien Nation. Based on the 1988 movie starring James Caan and Terrence Stamp, the show ran for just one season on Fox, but was continued a few years later with five made-for-TV movies.

The new take on Alien Nation is expected to be set in the Pacific Northwest, and will pick up 20 years after a number of of alien ships have crash landed on Earth. The aliens, dubbed “newcomers”, have since attempted to integrate with human society and their population now numbers in the millions. The show, much like its precursor, will address issues such as racism, terrorism and immigration, but will also apparently maintain the buddy cop angle.

So who will be the man in charge of this new show? None other than frequent Joss Whedon collaborator Tim Minear (Firefly, Angel, Wonderfalls). Consider me interested. I’m not quite sure it has the potential to become the next Battlestar Galactica, but I’ll definitely give it a chance. Let’s just hope this has more a little more success than some of Minear’s previous work. The guy really deserves a hit right about now.

  1. Pacific Northwest huh? So Vancouver, like every other damn sci-fi show? crimeny. The idea of the name change for the channel seems really stupid too. I guess this is all a bad idea but we’ll see.

  2. I think the scariest thing is it’s over 20 years from the original film!

I have fingers crossed on this one, the original series was a lot of fun.

  3. I’m in. Let’s go.

  4. Man were just look’in for anythink to talk about, there’s not much of a story here.

  5. Be interested in watching it, only problem I had with original premise is the whole “Hey were Aliens that dissolve in salt water, let’s all live in LA”

  6. I hope the remake doesn’t have ideological messages about racism/zenophobia/immigration. It would ruin it.

  7. As long as the original matt and george are the main focus of the story. i do not want another “reboot” like V i wanna see how the world changed from 14 years ago when we last saw them in the udra legacy, i really really want this show back on tv!!! make it happen people.
