Film Junk Poll: What ’80s Cartoon Do You Most Want to See on the Big Screen Next?

Nostalgia is still an extremely valuable commodity in Hollywood right now, with everyone trying to find ways to follow in the footsteps of Michael Bay and create the next massive blockbuster franchise. It seems a safe bet that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra will not be nearly as successful as Transformers, but if it’s even half as huge, you can bet we’ll be seeing more ’80s cartoons on the big screen very soon. That being said, which animated show would you like to see adapted for the big screen next? Some of the choices on the poll have been previously announced but aren’t yet in production. Cast your vote and then discuss some of the other possibilities in the comments below.

Posted by Pr1mal on June 30th, 2009I have to go with either mask or COPS – I would love to see how a caper would go down on the big screen!
Possible Cast for COPS:
Bulletproof – Michael Dorn
LongArm – Kevin Spacey
Bowser – Cheech Marin
Sundown – Tom Selleck
Dr. BadVibes – Jodie Foster
And BigBoss – John Goodman

Posted by Dugen on June 30th, 2009VOLTRON!!!!!!

Posted by Matt on June 30th, 2009I’d love to see Voltron, Robotech and The Smurfs, but like Dugen says, “They fucked up enough shit already.”.
Posted by Tomas on June 30th, 2009How about none, frankly I think cartoons are pretty stupid source material, and when GI Joe bombs I think Hollywood is going to peg Transformers as an aberation and stop trying.
Posted by MJS on June 30th, 2009I think I will sum it up with Richard Donner’s phrase “Verisimilitude”. If they make any of these that word “Verisimilitude” is what it would take to pull these off.
Robotech could be freaking awesome!!!!!!

Posted by Niklas on July 1st, 2009Think I’m right in saying that there is already a Smurfs film due at the end of the year!
Posted by Liney on July 1st, 2009As much as I’d like to see some Valkaryie fighters in live action. I’d rather see some Robot Lions make a super robot that bisects Robeasts carefully choosen in gladitorial combat.

Crossing my fingers that they don’t turn into something
Posted by Tomas on July 1st, 2009strictly for kids and all cutesy. I’d like to see a slightly darker edge to it. Like you know, Gargamel is a bad ass.
I voted for MASK as I think that would translate better to film even though my real choice is for Thundercats but I have a fear that a film version will make them all look like rejects from the musical “Cats”. One question though: isn’t the picture from “Gobots”? If so why is that not one of the choices? Yeah that’s what we need, another movie with cars turning into robots.
Posted by Maopheus on July 1st, 2009THEY ARE ALL GOING TO BE BAD…PERIOD. SO THE SMURFS IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR COMEDY!!!
Posted by Bob The Slob on July 1st, 2009Yeah the picture is from Gobots… I guess it probably should have been an option, especially if people are trying to copy Transformers. I just thought everyone hated the Gobots!
Posted by Sean on July 1st, 2009I was going to simply type “Hoooooooooooo!” as a loud and resounding endorsment of Thundercats, however, wasn’t “Hooooooooooo!” He-Man’s battle-cry as well?
I seem to remember He-Man yelling “Hoooooooooooooo!” after saying, “By the power of Greyskull, I am He-Man” am I mistaken? Am I just confusing him and Lion-o?
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on July 1st, 2009I believe after “By the power of grey skull” he boomed “I have the power!”
Posted by Alicia on July 1st, 2009Lion-o said “Thunder, thunder, thundercats…Hoooooo”.
@ Dugen
“None. They fucked up enough shit already.” if that was a choice…it would’ve had my vote
Posted by Mike on July 1st, 2009Alicia,
Right on! However, I think I prefer a masculine, baritone, “Hoooooooooo!” to the rather pretentious, and self-serving “I Have the Power!”
Besides, you can roll with Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Santa Claus as back up if your battle-cry is “Hooooooooooo!”
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on July 1st, 2009Duke Togo – Yes Thundarr would rock!!!!!!!!!! Just need to change the dates
