Monday Morning Box Office Report: Transform and Cash Out

Well it didn’t really break any major records, but Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen easily notched the biggest opening weekend so far in 2009, grossing $112 million over three days, and bringing its worldwide five day total to a staggering $387 million. It has vaulted to the third highest-grossing domestic movie of the year, and will likely overtake Up and Star Trek in the coming weeks despite poor reviews. Apparently people just can’t get enough of giant f’n robots! The Proposal dropped to #2, while The Hangover, Up and the Cameron Diaz/Abigail Breslin drama My Sister’s Keeper rounded out the top 5. Can you see anything else eclipsing Transformers 2 this year? Harry Potter perhaps?
1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — $112M
2. The Proposal — $18.5M
3. The Hangover — $17.2M
4. Up — $13M
5. My Sister’s Keeper — $12M
6. Year One — $5.8M
7. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 — $5.4M
8. Star Trek — $3.61M
9. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian — $3.5M
10. Away We Go — $1.68M

Jesus that’s depressing…
Posted by Fatbologna on June 29th, 2009Depressing indeed. Just more sad proof that commercial smut will never be out of style. . .
Posted by Erin on June 29th, 2009I just don’t understand the movie going audience?! All of these movies are designed for making the majority of their monies in the opening weekend to avoid the bad word-of-mouth and the dreaded “I’ll wait and see it on DVD or cable”. All of the economic reports talk about people being more concerned were they spend their money and families doing more Netflix nights at home over going to the theater. AND THEN THIS FILM MAKES SO MUCH MONEY!!! WTF! The numbers are so big you know it is not just teenagers. Is this part of the “auto-erotic” appeal we saw with Fast & Furious – people love cool vehicles, and they really love cool vehicles that turn in to robots??!!!

Posted by Marc on June 29th, 2009The Critics are LAME.
So does everyone think Michael Bay will make Transformers 3 (it’s not a question of whether the movie will be made… but who will direct)?
