General Zod Coming to Smallville, Metropolis TV Movie on the Way?

Back when Smallville was first getting started, I thought it was entertaining and addictive fluff. Despite all the cheesy teen soap opera elements, it also had an X-Files-esque vibe for the first couple of seasons, and it was cool to see their take on how Clark Kent slowly discovered his powers. Unfortunately, the show just started to get way too repetitive for my tastes, yet somehow it still managed to last for eight full seasons and will return for at least one more.

I think the main draw over the past few years has been the introduction of familiar characters from the DC Universe, from Supergirl to Brainiac and Doomsday to the Justice League (Aquaman, Green Arrow, The Flash, Martian Manhunter), and The Legion of Superheroes. Well, now it looks like the primary villain for next season may be of interest to fans of Superman: The Movie and Superman II. Callum Blue (Dead Like Me) has signed on to play General Zod in the ninth season, picking up on a storyline set up in the season 8 finale.

In other news, it looks like a Smallville movie may actually be in the works… sort of. According to Ain’t It Cool News, a tipster recently noticed some promotional materials being prepared for the San Diego Comic-Con with the words “Metropolis: Christmas 2010″ in the Smallville font, accompanied by a Superman logo. This has led to speculation that there is a feature-length Smallville telefilm in development that will serve as the series finale after season 9 concludes. While it seems unlikely that this would ever find its way into theatres, both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the limited release of Battlestar Galactica: Razor prove that it could be a possibility. Are you still watching Smallville? Is a feature-length finale something you’d like to see? Season 9 will premiere on The CW on September 25th.

  1. Making a Smallville movie, as an ending of a series that’s been holding it’s own for 8 years plus?
I think they’ve earned it. It’s the best Superman show out of all (in my opinion). Bring it on, yo!

  2. I’ve been continuously watching since Smallville started. For some reason, after I’ve committed myself to watch a show, I can’t stop watching even though the quality may dip. I admit I miss Kristen Kreuk as Lana. I like Smallville for the soap operish and the moralistic moments.

The finale for Season 8 was the best episode of the season IMO. I can’t believe they killed Jimmy Olsen.

  3. I JUST started watching this show on DVD. I’ve almost finished season 1. WTF? Is every episode going to have someone from their highschool get superpowers and then killed by the end of the show?

I can suspend disbelief for fun but this is getting ridiculous. EVERYONE gets a superpower and is killed by the end of the show – and Clark has rescued the Lex, Lana, or Chloe at least 3 times each… and nobody seems to question it or suspect a thing…

Please tell me the show gets better. When do the other superheroes start showing up? I don’t know if I can hold out much longer!

(although the episode where Lana strips to her panties and jumps into the pool was pretty sweet)

  4. shut-up Ed,
Yeah the show gets much better.
Unfortunately it remains much the same as season one to about season 4 or 5 then from then on it gets much more adult and serious. The first few years are largely focused on “coming of age” there aren’t any real interesting plot developments until the 5th season. Good luck!

  5. I am still watching Smallville. I’ve invested too many years of my life on this show to NOT follow it through to the end. The thought of Tom Welling pulling up his tights is what keeps me around. I’ve always thought that he’s the best Superman that has somehow never gotten to be Superman. I pray that Warner Brothers lets DC do this one up right! P.S. PLEASE bring back Michael Rosenbaum….. :)

  6. Season Five!?!?!?

    Shyeeeit.
