Watchmen Director’s Cut Still Coming to Theatres… For One Week Only

watchmendconeweek

When I posted the specs for the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen: Director’s Cut last month, I noted that it didn’t look like the movie would be getting a re-release in theatres after all. Apparently I spoke too soon, because The Hollywood Reporter tells us that it will still be getting a limited theatrical rollout — limited being the key word. The movie will return to theatres with 25 added minutes for one week only, and playing in just 4 U.S. cities (Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis and Dallas) starting on Friday, July 17th.

The DVD and Blu-ray will hit stores on Tuesday, July 21st, and then on Sat. July 25th there will be a special screening held at the San Diego Comic Con that will incorporate BD-Live interactivity. The idea is that viewers at home can watch the movie at the same time as the audience in San Diego, and also ask questions and get answers from Snyder himself. I don’t quite understand if Snyder will be talking before, after or during the movie, but the idea of a live running commentary seems kind of annoying to me. (The screening will also be archived online for those who can’t “tune in” live.) I have to admit, it’s one of the first times I’ve heard of the BD-Live feature being used in an interesting way, although I don’t think I will take part personally. I am, however, looking forward to rewatching the film with the extra scenes. Are you sick of hearing about Watchmen or are you looking forward to the Director’s Cut? Do you plan to see it in theatres?

  1. If the film really is 4 hours long then I think I will wait til DVD to watch it.

  2. I thought Watchmen was pretty good, although I did not enjoy it as much as 300.

Snyder has his own style and I would prefer to see him do his own thing rather than slavish adaptations.

I’m looking forward to Sucker Punch a lot.

  3. And people think Minneapolis is flyover country. Suck failure Chicago!

And while I wasn’t a fan of the original theatrical release, I am very interested in seeing if the director’s cut allows for a more flushed out story. I think their is a very good chance that it will be a superior film.

  4. Since I’m not anywhere close to these cities, I’ll wait for the DVD release.

  5. i enjoyed this movie, but it kinda struck a balance on the edge of ridiculousness, so adding more stuff to it … might throw the thing in the terlet. but yeah, i’ll probably want to see this at some point.
