New District 9 Viral PSA Clip
Apparently there’s a new viral PSA for District 9 that started playing in theatres last week — or so I’ve heard. I haven’t actually seen it in theatres myself, but thanks to the internet we can all check it out online instead. I’m curious to find out what kind of reaction this would get from people before a movie since it doesn’t actually make reference to District 9 itself other than to direct people to the website. Maybe this sounds stupid, but after watching this, it also makes me wonder if the current revolution going on in Iran will somehow make this movie’s political subtext that much more meaningful by the time it hits theatres in August.
On a related note, the L.A. Times recently did a piece on District 9’s viral marketing campaign, and confirmed that it seems to be working quite well for them. Apparently tons of people have been calling the phone number shown in the ads to report real alien sightings. Awesome. The article also has a couple quotes from me in it, believe it or not, although they kind of make it sound like I’m against viral marketing when in actuality I still think it’s pretty awesome.
