First Photos from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway

Here’s something pretty cool: Disney has released the first promotional photos from Tim Burton’s upcoming 3-D version of Alice in Wonderland, and they look every bit as creepy and demented as you’d expect. Above you can see Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter; after the jump I’ve included images of Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Over at USA Today, you can also see three pieces of concept art for the film.
For some reason I didn’t realize that the movie was already in production, but now that I’ve seen these pictures I’m pretty psyched to see what else Burton can come up with. Hopefully this will be another movie that actually takes 3-D to some interesting places. The cast also includes Mia Wasikowska (In Treatment) as Alice, plus Crispin Glover as The Knave of Hearts, Stephen Fry as The Cheshire Cat, Michael Sheen as The White Rabbit, Alan Rickman as The Caterpillar, Timothy Spall as The Bloodhound, and more! Alice in Wonderland hits theatres on March 5th 2010. What do you think of these images?
Update: We’ve also added an image of Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum courtesy of Movies.ie.

Looks cooll, BUT… are we EVER going to get a Burton-movie without his wife? I think she’s an okay actress (loved her in Fight Club), but this is getting pretty ridiculous!
Posted by Bas on June 22nd, 2009I seriously wish Burton would move past the Depp/Carter thing, I mean seriously, its getting pretty fucking annoying knowing exactly what you’re going to get from half the cast every time.
Posted by Goon on June 22nd, 2009I personally don’t think anyone else other than Helena could have pulled off the part in Sweeney Todd, and I expect the same exceptional preformance from her in this movie also. There are several movies that I love that she has been in. Fight Club, Big Fish, Harry Potter, and so on. I am sure she will not let us down.
Posted by caryn on June 22nd, 2009Sorry, but i think that Depp, Burton and Carter are a fabulous trio. If they still together making great movies I really don’t care if they’re always together. I think they work out well.
Posted by Niko on June 22nd, 2009So far I have loved every movie that Burton & Depp have done together… and I think that Depp & Carter make a great team because Sweeny Todd was awesome. I do appreciate the fact that Depp does do other movies, I must say I’m excited to see Public Enemies. I agree with Niko, as long as the movies are still amazing and funny and dark and interesting… and of course entertaining, I don’t care if they do 50 Burton/Depp/Carter movies.
Posted by Amy on June 22nd, 2009what ever happened to Mr Depp making Dark Shadows ???
Posted by DJ Fruit Loops on June 22nd, 2009I agree. I’ve LOVED Burton’s stuff forever, and those three work very well. I always look forward to seeing what Burton ca come up with next, and these pics are wicked. I can’t WAIT to see how this movie turns out!
Posted by Mistress Rae on June 22nd, 2009Damn that’s some pretty radical transformation. Impressive.

looks amazing!
Posted by modesilver on June 22nd, 2009d’oh! you did aleady. my bad
Posted by modesilver on June 22nd, 2009Burton’s style of “weird and creepy” is neither creepy or weird to me anymore.
“I’m pretty psyched to see what else Burton can come up with.”
That same tired blend of “weird & creepy.” However, it will truly be creepy if Helena Bonham Carter’s noggin is digitally stretched like that!
Posted by Ryan M. on June 22nd, 2009I’m actually kinda interested after viewing the USA Today pics…I think it’s just people referring to Burton’s films as “weird” and “creepy” that I’m sick of.
Posted by Ryan M. on June 22nd, 2009This will be worth seeing, but am I wrong or does this seem to be completely over-indulgent of Burton’s typical style?
Posted by Jon Rocks on June 22nd, 2009I cannot wait to smoke up and see this! just like I did with the first one…I am so pumped for a good depp movie! (pirates sucked, all of them)
Posted by Bob O. on June 22nd, 2009woww, i didn’t even know that they had a Tim Burton, Alice in Wonderland movie coming out; and in 3D at that!
Posted by chris on June 22nd, 2009wow, that Madhatter character is going to give me nightmares and I’m not even a kid!
Posted by rus in chicago on June 22nd, 2009the movie is going to be amazing. Johnny depp, burton, and carter are a perfect trio. But focusing more on depp and burton, one without the other just wouldn’t cut it. It’s like ben aflec with no matt damon, jay without silent bob, michael Scott with no “that’s what she said”. It’s just not the same. And not near as good. If there’s good chemistry. Keep it going. I personally cannot wait until this movie!
Posted by J.T on June 22nd, 2009I’m not sure what to think about these photos, I hate most of Tim Burton’s movies, but this could be interesting.
Posted by Steven C. on June 22nd, 2009Chocolate Factory was terrible and this looks like Chocolate Factory all over again…
Timmy obviously can get a little carried away with making things visually stimulating and loses focus on the story – I’d hate to see that happen here because this one of the greatest stories in literature, period.
Posted by Shut-Up Ed on June 22nd, 2009“am I wrong or does this seem to be completely over-indulgent of Burton’s typical style?”
Tim Burton’s “style” is about as imitable as the current pastel-colored indie dramedy craze. I seriously feel like Tim Burton has merely been emulating his greater successes for almost 2 decades now.
Also, anyone remember American McGee’s “Alice”? It would be cool if the movie could be that dark.
Posted by Ryan M. on June 22nd, 2009Burton has always put his old lady of the moment in his movies, remember Lisa Marie or whatever, the chick with the super skinny waist, before HBC? She was in all his movies as well. Kinda like Rob Zombie with Sherry Moon. A lot of directors have some kind of thing like that, like Hitchcock and M. Night and their cameos, although with Hitch it never detracted from his movies and was just a fun bit of trivia whereas Night thought he was an actor. If it detracts from the movie then I would complain about it, or if it’s clear that someone better should have been cast, but so far Burton’s roles for Depp and HBC have been very appropriate.
Posted by Maopheus on June 22nd, 2009The Mad Hatter looks like Carrot Top and Elijah Wood made it.
Posted by BigHungry on June 22nd, 2009I’m SO glad that Burton’s stopped using fuckin’ Johnny Depp and decided to finally give Madonna the break she’s always striven for! GOOD ON’ IM!
Posted by fatbologna on June 22nd, 2009Cool pics I guess. I’ve never read novel so I don’t know if it’s actually closer to Lewis Carroll’s vision and whatnot, but I think maybe it would be kinda like the PC game American Mcgee’s Alice which was pretty twisted. Either way, I’m looking forward to the film.
The Burton-Carter team-up is something I don’t mind at all. Usually Nepotism is usually a bad idea in the world of show business, but it works because Helena is a talented actress and Burton is a great director.
Posted by Pr1mal on June 22nd, 2009wow, a must see film. can’t wait.
Posted by little los angeles on June 23rd, 2009Amazing, I agree with both BigHungry and fatbologna!
As for Depp & HBC, it’s not that I think they suck or anything. But even though their acting in each new Burton flick is great, the parts are often very much alike and it starts to become a distraction in and of its own that they are always there. Just the fact that he used Ewan McGregor instead of Depp for Big Fish was refreshing and a big plus for the movie to me. It’s like a painter deciding he’s only going to use red and yellow for the rest of his career, when I’d really like to see what he can do with some other colors.
Posted by Bas on June 23rd, 2009Bas, good point on the painter analogy I could not agree with you more on wanting to see more from the artist.
Posted by Big Hungry on June 23rd, 2009WoW! Very good make- up artists job! I really like them and I’m going to watch that movie certainly.
Posted by Mia-Maria on June 23rd, 2009Well done!
i agree with everyone who doesn’t care how many movies johnny depp, burtons wife, and carter does. Johnny depp is one of the greatest actors today and makes every roll his own. and even though the other two are not in his leauge, the other two are the same way. This movie looks awesome. if johnny depp is in it it will be fantastic. I would like to see pics of the chesire cat, and the bong smokin catipillar
Posted by Rick on June 23rd, 2009who better to bring out the ties from alice in wonderland to the drug culture then tim mother fuckin burton!!!! can’t wait
Posted by Rick on June 23rd, 2009There are many many movies where actors are together in movie after movie. Look at any Adam Sandler Movie. Many of the same cast. I love them and I love this trio! Also Gary Marshall uses many of the same actors in his movie. I’ve been waiting for this movie for awhile! I can’t wait!
Posted by Sarah on June 23rd, 2009And the caterpillar smokes out of a hooka. fyi
Posted by Sarah on June 23rd, 2009I totally forgot Big Fish was Burton’s. I liked that when I saw it in the theater. It was less slavish to his style. Thinking back on Sleepy Hollow, I wish that he had used Christina Ricci in more movies, I think she’s definitely his type of actress. Some of the roles that HBC got, I think Ricci could have done quite well with them. Oh well, guess she should have dated him then maybe she’d have had those parts.
Posted by Maopheus on June 23rd, 2009Rick, Helena Bonham Carter IS Burton’s wife. And she’s done a good job with her 6 ‘Burton’ roles so far, but you can’t tell me that she was the perfect actress for each and every one of those parts. He casts her (in very appropriate parts) because she’s his wife. Tim Burton creates elaborate, fantastical worlds in his movies, but when I keep seeing the same two faces in them it takes me out of the experience. I’m not saying they should never make another movie together, but I’d like to see Burton take a little more risk casting-wise.
Posted by Bas on June 23rd, 2009lol, bas you used words to fit your argument that essentialy mean the same thing
“He casts her (in very appropriate parts)”
isnt that the same thing as being the perfect person for the roll. HBC is great. Fantastic actress, why shouldn’t he cast his wife. I just call that a great husband. and as long as she can act who cares. His movies makes a ton of money. Thats all that matters
BIG FISH RULES!
Posted by Rick on June 23rd, 2009Depp looks like the material girl madonna
Posted by ErwinAnFire on June 23rd, 2009Hey Rick, like I said I think she does a great job, so that’s clearly not the point I’m making, m’kay? She, Depp & Burton are all great. And who Burton casts is HIS decision. But I’d be surprised if any other actress ever got to audition for those parts, i.e. she got the roles because she’s the misses. Tim Burton doesn’t owe me anything, but I’m just stating my opinion that I wouldn’t mind seeing him pick some other leads, like he did by casting McGregor in Big Fish. You say BIG FISH RULES, and I too like it, but do you think it would rule even more if Johnny Depp was playing McGregor’s part? Because I don’t!
Posted by Bas on June 24th, 2009“His movies make a ton of money. That’s all that matters.”
As someone who likes movies, the amount of money they make has very little interest to me. Are you Burton’s banker or something?
Posted by Bas on June 24th, 2009did you know that the author of “alice in wonderland” wrote the book on LSD
Posted by K on June 24th, 2009are you sure about that K, it sounds fishy.
you like movies, you go to be enjoyed. how much money they make has nothing to do with you bas. but it does mean alot to burton. and i couldn’t say weather i’d like big fish more because he casted ewan. that would just be speculating and so it’s a stupid question. if him casting these people over and over bother you so much, take out a loan, make your own movie, and cast who ever you want.
Posted by Rick on June 24th, 2009Getting excited for a film these days, in my opinion, is pretty hard. With the absolutely banal, and literally exploitative pursuit that hollywood has bombarded us with over the years, making us seem like unintelligent vermin that will basically pay for anything…i.e the unbelievable amount of remakes, “summer blockbusters”, etc…and considering the amount of films that are actually worth watching, that receive no praise…it seems unlikely that another film directed by Tim Burton will suffice for all the other less than watch-worthy films being made as I write this.
To call Tim Burton in to direct another version of this wonderful story seems ludicrous to me. With the highest amount of respect given, and knowing that Burton is relatively intelligent, I can honestly say that almost all of Tim Burton’s films are aesthetically nice, direction of actors is not too bad, but most importantly are cliche, and almost unnecessary.
I believe his best worked stayed in the late 80’s when he directed PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE and an episode of Shelley Duvall’s FAERIE TALE THEATRE..which was ALADDIN. I believe that choosing Burton to direct BATMAN was probably the worst mistake for him and for the film in general…as the output was disgraceful, and it sky rocketed Burton into a high level of pretentiousness that was completely evident throughout the rest of his career.
Edward Scissorhands was possibly his only endearing attempt at creating something original, and to this day stands as the only film worth watching from Burton.
As far as I can tell, his take on ALICE IN WONDERLAND will bring forth another convoluted attempt by a massive production company in putting faith in a man who’s ego has gotten the best of him, thus his work has suffered, and will continue to suffer because of it.
After having to sit through his unbearable take on CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, I cannot see a redeeming quality left in the man. It seems like he will simply accept any “surreal” or “fantastical” film script that is offered to him.
I can think of at least 10 other directors who would have much more of a pertinent vision, not only concentrating on the look, but hopefully bringing forth a unique and original perspective on such a timeless tale.
To conclude my rant…I will say this…Tim Burton has talent. If anything else, I would like to put myself in a position where I can still be surprised from a redundant artist. Having said that, I won’t hold my breath for ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
Posted by Soop27 on June 24th, 2009I can’t wait. This looks like it’s going to be amazing. The group works well together.
Johnny does look a bit strange though, anyhow I am super excited.
Posted by Clara on June 24th, 2009I see the point that Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are in most (…all) of Burton’s later films, but it looks as if in this movie they will be more minor characters. That’s good, right? Maybe some of us will get our wish and see some new faces.
Posted by SideShowBob on June 25th, 2009(:
Stop whining. She’s a great actor. It’s not like he picks her personally.
Posted by Zach on June 25th, 2009Stephen Sondheim handpicked her for the role of Mrs. Lovett.
Her image fits all of Burton’s movies.
hey guys quit whining ’bout burton. creepy/goth/cool is his style. and put’n his wife in his movies is his choice, he’s make’n the movie not you. depp, burton and carter make the perfect team. if you dont like his movies, then dont watch them!!!!!! and dont trash them!!!! if you dont like the movies thats your choice, dont go trash’n movies that been #1 in the u.s. and #1 round the WORLD, (pirates 3 for more than 2 weeks). people that trash J.D, Tim, and Helena just are beg’n to get their ass kicked. and i know all you J.D, Tim, and Helena fans would love to help. this new moviw looks like its gunna be huge, #1 in the world make’n over a billion $$$. and i’m gunna be watch’n it on the midnight premiere!
Posted by Sammie on June 25th, 2009I believe that unintelligent people who post their thoughts about people giving their opinion, when opinion is due, make an obvious statement on the type of people that enjoy the films of Tim Burton during this point in time.
To the person named SAMMIE who left post #47…before scrutinizing or criticizing someone elses opinions, you might want to stop and think before you type. You are the quintessential reason why I decided to post my thoughts on Tim Burton. Mindless dribble seems to always relate in some way or another to Tim Burton, and his supporters are here to prove it.
Posted by Soop27 on June 26th, 2009maybe mr. Burton likes to spend time with his wife and he problably like to make movies too, so why not combine it? I can’t wait to see this movie, hopefully disney doesn’t have to much influence on the content. don’t forget to lick the stamp for the real wonderland experience.
Posted by tom on July 7th, 2009Depp/Carter is one of the most brilliant combos ever. I cant wait to see this. Tim Burton is a genious in own style of directing.
Posted by Debbie Clark on July 11th, 2009Alice In Wonderland will kick ass!!!

Posted by johnny depp lover on July 14th, 2009this movie is going to be amazing and who really cares if he keeps casting the same people. his movies alwas turn out great and have never let us down. him and jonny depp just work well together, only a dynamic actor such as him could cultivate the caracters mood and personality. and of course his wife and him work together well they are married. i just cant wait till May 5 2010
Posted by nightmare on July 16th, 2009I don’t care what kinda show it turns out to be, as long as Johnny Depp is in it, im all for it! That dude if fucking hot, no matter how fucked up they try to make his character look! I also believe this movie is based on an Acid Trip. For God sakes, she falls down a rabbit hole, meets a purple cat that is smoking weed the entire movie and that mad hatter dude….well you can tell he is deff. trippin on something. I would say this is not a kids movie by far! ACID TRIPPPPPPP, Alice is fuckkkked up!
Posted by ashlee on July 26th, 2009i think tim has chosen a wonderful cast and an even wonderful story to do. although this story has been made into a number of films and has very diferent versions. i would like tim do make a film based on the story the little match girl around christmas time and see wht he can do with it.
Posted by tanya on August 4th, 2009yeah i agree. I think tim burton is a great director with great vision. And if Johnny depp is in it it’s going to be even greater. Who cares if he’s in all his movies. WHat does it matter. you go to movies to be entertained. to have fun. If your bothered by his preffered pick of actors then just don’t go. I don’t think there is anybody here who can say johnny depp is a over rated class b actor. you can’t because it’s just not true. So as far as i’m concerened. What does it, what could it possibly matter?
Posted by rick on August 4th, 2009Who cares if they do a hundred films together. I think it’s a great team and love all their movies. At least they do change with the character they are playing. So many actors seem to be the same in every film. I am excited to see this version of Alice.
