New To Theatres This Weekend: Year One, The Proposal, Whatever Works

The major new releases for this weekend are the biblical comedy Year One starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, and the romantic comedy The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. I suspect the latter will bring in more people, although I doubt either of them will be able to touch The Hangover or Up. Also in select theatres we have Woody Allen’s new movie Whatever Works starring Larry David of Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm fame, and in just one theatre we have the Norwegian nazi zombie flick Dead Snow. What will you be checking out?
- Year One
- The Proposal
- Dead Snow (limited)
- Whatever Works (limited)
- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (sneak previews)
- Away We Go (expanding)

i know it’s semantics, but…a biblical comedy? I haven’t seen it, but cavemen aren’t in the bible, christians don’t believe in cavemen.
Posted by Mike on June 19th, 2009I saw Year One last night and although I liked land of the lost more, thought it was still funny. A lot of the fart and poo jokes I didn’t laugh at, michael cera I didn’t laugh at all that much. Jack black is the best thing about this film and I thought it would have been better if cera wasn’t in it. Anyway im interested in seans review a day before the podcast as usual =)
Posted by AdamH on June 19th, 2009Been hearing some very bad word of mouth regarding Year One. Shame.
Posted by swarez on June 19th, 2009Not much interesting stuff except Dead Snow. I downloaded it a few months back and it was pretty funny.
Posted by Raph on June 19th, 2009Swarez, I think it really depends on if you like Jack Black or not. Its definetly not the funniest film of the year but there are some good jack black moments in there that redeemed it in the last half I think
Posted by AdamH on June 19th, 2009@ Raph- was Dead Snow with subtitles or dubbed? It’s available On Demand here in NJ, but it’s dubbed and I might just wait for the DVD. My local arthouse theater isn’t showing it.
Posted by ToeFu on June 19th, 2009Hopefully this doesn’t derail the thread.
christians don’t believe in cavemen
Actually, most do.
Posted by Matt Gamble on June 20th, 2009@ToeFU Mine was with subtitles. I would never watch it dubbed
.
Posted by Raph on June 20th, 2009Dead Snow is pretty aces. It wears it’s influences on it’s sleeve and doesn’t try to be more than it is. The last 20 minutes or so are pretty fuckin’ great in a Dead Alive-lite sort of fashion.
Plus, Snow, Nazi-Zombies(Zombie-Nazis?), sweet Skidoo stuntin’ and ugly Norwegian people all ad up to delicious, bloody fun!
Posted by fatbologna on June 21st, 2009dang! from the trailer and everything year one looked really promising. i’ll still probably enjoy it more since i like michael cera’s style of comedy.
Posted by modesilver on June 21st, 2009Christians don’t believe in cavemen? Really? Crap. I thought I DID believe in caveman but now you’re telling me I don’t… Damn, what a pickle.
Anywho – Year One is getting absolutely SAVAGED by critics but I still want to see it – I think Cera is hilarious – I get the feeling that there is this sort or counter-Cera movement out there since he plays the same character in every movie, and I agree, but I am not tired of it yet. It’s still hilarious.
I don’t know if I will be able to catch this one in theaters but I’ll grab it on DVD fo’ sho.
