Weekly Poll Results: Best ’70s Cop Movie

It looks like Dirty Harry just barely edged out The French Connection in last week’s poll about the best ’70s cop movies. Together they accounted for over 50% of the votes (no surprise there), but I was a bit surprised to see the original The Taking of Pelham One Two Three down near the bottom. As some of you have pointed out, however, it probably counts as more of a heist movie than a cop movie. The Seven-Ups was dead last in the poll, but I suspect that is more a result of the fact that not many people have seen it. I haven’t either, but hey, I hear it’s worth checking out!
1. Dirty Harry — 26.3%
2. The French Connection — 25.5%
3. Dog Day Afternoon — 16.5%
4. Serpico — 7.8%
5. Bullitt — 6.6%
6. Assault on Precinct 13 — 6.2%
7. The Conversation — 3.7%
8. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three — 3.3%
9. Shaft — 2.5%
10. The Seven-Ups — 1.6%

whoever on this site suggested the book Action Speaks Louder, I want to thank you – I got it used on Amazon and it is awesome. Breakdown the origins of the modern action films starting with French Connection and Dirty Harry….

Great Poll!
Posted by Nemesis on June 17th, 2009Yes, I think when it comes down to it, Dirty Harry is just way more rewatchable. I appreciate French Connection for what it does and the gutsy ending, but its such a bleak downer of a movie. Also, Dirty Harry has the better soundtrack by far.
Posted by bullet3 on June 17th, 2009Nice to see Pelham 123 on the list. It’s one of those films that gets better with repeated viewings and the humor throughout (particularly Matthau keeping a straight face when saying some pretty funny stuff) makes it even more entertaining.
Posted by Trini on June 19th, 2009Bullitt is not a ’70s movie, it was made in 1968. It did kind of presage the ’70s cop movie with a grittier, more violent and pessimistic tone, so I guess you can include it in the list despite it not strictly being from the ’70s.
