Natalie Portman to Star in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan

After learning this week that Darren Aronofsky’s Robocop remake is being pushed back to 2011, we’re now starting to see some movement on another project he has in development, a thriller called Black Swan. The Hollywood Reporter brings us our first major casting announcement: Natalie Portman is now signed on for the lead role. The script was recently rewritten by Mark Heyman (who also co-produced Aronofsky’s The Wrestler) and is currently being shopped around to studios.

Black Swan is described as a “supernatural thriller” that is set in the unlikely world of New York City ballet. When a veteran ballerina finds herself in competition with another dancer for a major gig, the pressure builds and she finds herself questioning what is real and what is not. For some reason it is being compared to The Others, although it sounds like the similarities are fairly superficial. Although I’ve been pretty interested to see Aronofsky’s take on Robocop, I’m willing to watch absolutely anything the guy does at this point. This project may not sound like anything extraordinary based on the premise alone, I remain confident that he can make it a masterpiece. Scoring Portman in the lead role certainly won’t hurt either. Are you excited about this project, or would you rather see Aronofsky tackle Robocop first?

  1. I got to agree with you Sean, the premise for this movies sounds rather pedestrian. But I love Aronofsky and think he is really talented and should make this material more interesting than it sounds.

Robocop would have been cool…any reason why it was pushed back?

As for Portman sometimes I really like her and sometimes I really hate her. Her talent really varies from good to bad. She seems to lack consistency.

  2. cue Thom Yorke track of the same name for trailer music. I don’t see this as being pedestrian at all. The fact that I’m intetested in a movie about ballet is enough to tear a rift in the space time continuum.

  3. 1138 – yeah Aronofsky couldn’t possibly make an interesting film about a dancer that would be like making a film about a mathematician!

  4. i can’t believe i’m saying this….but i have to agree with 1138 this time around, about pretty much everything he said. It could be a quite entertaining movie. And portman’s performences varry between oscar winning to hillary duff. but with Aronofsky behind the wheel it should be entertaining to say the least

  5. Portman has already admitted she can’t fake interest in work that doesn’t inspire her, sorry Star Wars fans, she will be fine.

  6. can’t wait to see Robocop
