David Hayter to Write Deadworld Zombie Movie

Did somebody order more zombies? Actor and screenwriter David Hayter (X-Men, Watchmen) is set to pen another comic book adaptation, this time drawing from Stuart Kerr and Ralph Griffith’s independent zombie series Deadworld. However, this is not quite your typical zombie story. The comics are from the point of view of the zombies, focusing on King Zombie, “a Harley-riding corpse who holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast”. Clearly, only one man is suitable for this role: Nicolas Cage!

Variety says that Pandemonium and Framelight Productions are hoping that this will spawn a “multipic story arc”, and that Hayter will also be in charge of the visual design of the film. He had this to say:

“It’s very much about the design of the Deadworld and creating cool, frightening but not necessarily gory creatures… I am a huge fan of zombie mythology.”

It’s not clear if the zombies will be done with CG or make-up, but the project does sound like it could be cool. Besides, maybe if this does well, we’ll eventually get a Marvel Zombies movie one of these days! No word on the status of Hayter’s Lost Planet movie, which he was also supposed to be writing a script for.

  1. Zombies don’t have a “point of view,” THEY’RE FRIGGIN ZOMBIES.

I’ve never heard of this comic. Sounds like it can work on paper, but will probably fall into rank absurdity if moved to the silver screen.

    blech!

  2. For some reason, I see Tommy Lee Jones as King Zombie.

  3. The book was not written from the zombie’s POV. It tracked a small group of survivors from one town through the PAW. The world quickly declined into armed camps where warlords provided zombie-vs-gladiator type entertainment to the masses. In the meantime, a small group of smart zombies (one of which gets called “King Zombie” by the humans) is out to find the human who can open the door-to-Hell the rest of the way. They can command the other zombies and summon and control these 4-armed demons.

Unfortunately, the book couldn’t keep a publisher long enough to really develop the plot.
