Shia LaBeouf Turns Down Y: The Last Man Movie

The big screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man comic book series has been in development for a few years now, with D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) attached to direct. Although it was never officially confirmed, everyone was assuming that Shia LaBeouf would take on the lead role, due to his involvement in Caruso’s previous flicks and his resemblance to the character of Yorick Brown… but hold on a second there, pardner. It seems that LaBeouf may not be so quick to sign on to this project after all.
In a recent interview with Wizard, LaBeouf shoots down the rumours, saying that the role is too similar to his character in Transformers:
“You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder. I don’t know if it’s that big a differential. It seems like he’s the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again… I’m not willing to make that movie currently and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around.”
He then goes on to say that Y: The Last Man is his favourite comic book… how does this make any sense? As much as The Beef is suffering from a bit of overexposure right now, this is a role he was born to play. Is this just him being a rock star? I mean, I guess it’s smart for him to want to branch out a bit, but come on! You’re going to turn down a lead role in your favourite comic book because it’s not a big enough “differential” from Transformers? While I’m sure there are plenty of other people who could play the role, I worry that without LaBeouf’s name attached, this movie may never get off the ground. Who would you like to see starring in a Y: The Last Man movie?

he looks like he’s going to “deep throat” that banana…
Posted by paulm on June 10th, 2009^ LMAO exactly my thought. Of the zillion pictures of Shia, Sean chooses this haha.
Posted by modesilver on June 10th, 2009I chose it cause it made me laugh.
Posted by Sean on June 10th, 2009Ah like there could be any other reason ey Sean?
Posted by modesilver on June 10th, 2009Cripes! If he thinks that Sam’s character is just like Yorick than these aren’t the right people to make a Y: The Last Man movie.

Tell me about it. It really is an arogant fuck you to Brian K Vaughn. I like Shia but good riddance.
According to someone on the CHUD forums he’s got his heart set on a passion project about Eminem rival Cage. Best of luck on that, and it could be a good career move for him but his remarks about Yorick are just ignorant.
Posted by Rusty James on June 10th, 2009this is good news to me, a fan of the comic. like you said sean, the movie may not have the star power that labeouf carries, but the good news is the movie won’t have shaia labeouf.

Posted by Reed Farrington on June 10th, 2009Maybe he just doesn’t want to work with Caruso again. Wouldn’t blame ‘em. He’d be great for Yorick though.
“may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around”
I don’t remember how old Yorick is; but it’ll be about ten years before you look to old for the part. Besides Shia, don’t you realize if you’re attached that this film will be made instantly!?
Posted by Ryan M. on June 11th, 2009Am I the only one here who still thinks of him most as Louis Stevens from EVEN STEVENS? I always think of that role when I see the guy.
When I was watching Even Stevens as a kid, I never thought this guy would do much after that show. Look at him now! I never thought he would become a huge Hollywood actor. It’s weird for me.

For real… get an unknown and make a good film !
this is a wave of relief. I loved The entire Y series and LaBeouf translated in French is ‘female crotch sanitizer’. That Cage movie seems pretty weak too. It seems like a role choice to try and gain a little edge and it rings false. If I recall correctly, Cage in the earlier years was also on the chunky side so maybe that’s why Shia is downing those penis shaped yellow fruits with such fervor.

Posted by Jason Mongiello on June 16th, 2009Shia LaBeouf should turn down everything.
Posted by Jackson on June 17th, 2009I want to see some unknown actors for the “Y” movie. I’m really tired of the same overused, mega celebrities taking up all the space. It would be refreshing to see some new talent for once. “Y” would be less about the movie and more about the already well-known actors in it.
I’d like to think that the new talent debuting in the movie would be like a homage to the original series, where you have these obscure people (Mann, Yorick and 355) going all over the place and being made known through their many encounters. To have over-used celebrities would just be boring and pointless.
Posted by Jess on August 14th, 2009Im glad Shia turned it down…I’d rather see an unknown play Yorick…If not an unknown, how bout Adam Brody?? He has the personality of Yorick and is a big comic book fan.
Posted by hans on August 18th, 2009“sam and yorick are too similar” he obviously is using that as an excuse. if it’s his favorite comic book than he wants to wait for it to come out and watch it! you do all that work and all those stunts, the retake after retake…. the movie/story looses its magic. He wants to enjoy his favorite film, not get judged on how well he adapts yorick’s character.
o and ZACHARY LEVI from CHUCK would kick butt! plus the chick (yovon somtinorudda) who plays sara in chuck can be Beth! they are both Australian.
Posted by Samantha on August 20th, 2009yes! Zachary and Yovon.

Posted by comic book nerd on August 25th, 2009Thank God. I’m glad he turned it down. When I first heard that they were considering him for the role of Yorick, I wanted to cry. Shia can go ruin some other movie now.

“That Cage movie seems pretty weak too.”
Posted by Jizz Fist Jones on November 24th, 2009Do your homework buddy. If you know anything about Cage, you will know that a film about his life would be fuckin epic. If it is done well that is. I would like to see Darren Aronofsky or michel Gondry Direct it. Handled correctly a film about Cage could be a cult classic. on level with Requiem for A Dream or Spun. I don’t know how well Shia could play such a dark role, but i would give him the benefit of the doubt. Mainstream Hollywood should keep their hands off it tho, to give it any hope of it’s amazing potential. It needs to be an indie flick. Maybe Craig Brewer could do it justice. i don’t know! I just wanna see it get done so can watch it.
I’m sorry, but everything he says makes perfect sense.
It kills me that the blogger that wrote this doesn’t see it.
Posted by Laney on December 3rd, 2009Not to be a raging fan bitch or anything but… how are they similar? I mean Yorick: Awesome goofy nerd, who is an English Major, magician, nerd, and all round goofy wise cracking ball of awesome. Fighting to save humanity in a fucked up morally Grey world. Not too mention he has a monkey called Ampersand. v.s Sam: Some guy who wants a hot ride to impress some pair of boobs who knows how to change oil, happens to get some robotic car that has an in-built moron plot chip. I mean hey Transformers was great but… really Shia?
