and now some random tv director makes some pathetic atempt to match it???

and of course he does what every other american sequal does, take younger sibling/reletive and do the exact same fucking story!

As an avid fan of Donnie Darko I was half intrigued half outraged at the idea of a sequel. However I gave it a try, going into it unbiased and found a poor mimic of the original… the masked character on the trampoline, the mirrored quotes, the same pick-up shots. I wouldn’t recommend it to any true fan of the original if you are looking for a serious sequel, there will only ever be one Donnie Darko, I certainly wont be watching it again.

on S. Darko:

The original Donnie Darko is perhaps the bonafide first 21st century cult movie. To the point where it even flirted with big mainstream success on DVD.

But as a DTV sequel the reaction seemed to be more Ho-Hum than actual outrage at removing the creator (Richard Kelly) from the process by the rights holder. But then again the movie is pretty ho-hum. It is simply not a good movie. Itâ€™s not the flat out embarrassment that some people suspected, but it is not very good either.

Daveigh Chase is pretty poor in the film, and certainly canâ€™t carry it, and the narrative twists seem pretty ill conceived and more catering to the whims of the writers than actual character development or motivation.

This movie was horrible. Donny Darko is still one of my favorite movies to date. This movie threw in some time travel and blobs together with another end of the world situation and calls it “darko”. They completely missed the point of Donny, and should be a major insult to any true fan of the original. I watched it with an open mind but in the end the movie was shit. And if you don’t think Jake Gyllenhaal did an amazing performence then you should watch the movie again.

No Jake Gyllenhaal? Forget it. His performance (not outstanding, but fit for the role) along with the general pessimistic/trippy horror style of the first made the movie. But I don’t think you can mix anti-conformist messages and sequels. It just doesn’t make sense.

Oh yeah, and the Mad World song. Perfect song for it.
