James Cameron Joins Forces with David Fincher on Heavy Metal

Last year it was announced that David Fincher would be teaming up with TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman to put together a new animated film based on the ’70s fantasy/sci-fi magazine Heavy Metal. It would be comprised of eight or nine segments, each from a different director. However, the project encountered some problems later in the year when Paramount pulled out, possibly as a result of a disagreement with Fincher over The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything, but now this week we finally have an update on the project, and apparently it has even more amazing names attached to it!

In an interview with Film School Rejects, Kevin Eastman reveals that James Cameron has come on board as a co-executive producer and also as a director of one of the segments. Zack Snyder and Gore Verbinski have also signed on, along with Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda) who will be doing a segment with Jack Black. Three more directors who are “equally as jaw-dropping” should be announced shortly. How amazing does this sound? It will be great to see Fincher and Cameron collaborate since they both seem to have similar styles and no-nonsense attitudes as directors. While no studio has been announced yet, it’s hard to imagine anyone saying no to this all-star line-up. Are you a fan of the original Heavy Metal films? Who else would you like to see involved in this?

  1. amazingness aside, i misread this title completely as “James Cameron forces David Fincher to do ‘Heavy Metal’”

i guess that would have different implications.

  2. This should be fun. The great part of this anthology approach is that the movie most likely can’t entirely fail . . . I know, I know I say that now. But I guess Cameron is making a come back and even if it’s crap that’s a good thing.

  3. Wonder Twins Unite! Shape of a grindhouse type film, form of a film nerd hard-on!

  4. I would look forward to this as long as they do not rely on naked big chested women as the main plot point. Hey I like that but keep it where it belongs and do not force it in if it does not belong. That is one of the issues with the first movie that they did.

The best part of the original movie even had no women it. It was the B-17: A World War II bomber story. An instant classic in my opinion for movie animation. A short simple story but effective and the style and music rocked.

  5. Paul Verhoveen, Larry Clark, and Robert Rodriguez

  6. Guillermo del Toro would be good.
The Loc-Nar should be back in this movie but with a better story thread.
