Ridley Scott Producing a Blade Runner Prequel Web Series

Although there were some rumblings last year about a possible Blade Runner sequel being written by Travis Wright (Eagle Eye, The Warriors), the whole thing was pretty unofficial, and if the fans have anything say about it, the project will probably never get off the ground. But what if Ridley Scott himself were to return to the Blade Runner franchise? Is that something people would be more receptive to?
He’s previously been rumoured to have an interest in returning to the Alien franchise, and now according to The New York Times, his production company RSA Films has already started production on something called Purefold — a web series “set at a point in time before 2019″ that is “inspired by Blade Runner”. Ridley Scott’s brother Tony and son Luke are also involved, along with production studio Ag8. They hope to shape the 5 to 10 minute episodes around input from viewers via Friend Feed, and release it under the Creative Commons license.
So is this connected to Blade Runner or isn’t it? Well, since they don’t actually own the rights to the book anymore, the simple answer is no. However, David Bausola, founding partner of Ag8, had this to say:
“We don’t take any of the canon or copyrighted assets from the movie… It’s actually based on the same themes as Blade Runner. It’s the search for what it means to be human and understanding the notion of empathy.”
What do you think, does this sound promising, or is it just a waste of time?

Based on that Caprica pilot I saw it sounds like Ron Moore and Ridley Scott should have had a meeting and worked something out to cover these themes in a way that would be fulfilling. I just don’t expect much from either thing. I will check it out though ’cause you can’t really judge until you’ve seen the product.
