First Bruno Lawsuit More Serious Than Borat Lawsuits

I know it should come as no surprise that the first lawsuit for Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film Bruno has already been filed over a month before the movie hits theatres… but don’t these people usually wait to make sure a movie makes a lot of money before they bother suing? A couple of years back, Fox had a number of lawsuits to deal with in the wake of Borat, none of which actually succeeded. If anything, it only generated more publicity for the film, and apparently, in some cases Fox even countersued for attorney fees and won. However, the Borat lawsuits were not nearly as serious as this one.

While most of those previous cases were from people who had been duped and made to look silly on screen, this one is from a woman who claims that Cohen and his crew physically assaulted her in order to get an emotional response for the camera, and that afterward she passed out, hit her head, and is now confined to a wheelchair. The incident took place at a charity bingo game in Palmdale, CA where she emceed the event, when Bruno started causing a disturbance and using “vulgar and offensive language”. She tried to take the mic back from Bruno, at which point a physical struggle took place, with three cameramen reportedly getting involved in the melee as well. Once again this brings up the issue of the tactics used by Sacha Baron Cohen in these movies, which in some cases may be legal, but still sound pretty unfair and unethical. Regardless of the outcome of this lawsuit, do you think it will sway public opinion, or will it merely add to the hype for the film?

  1. Well … I am not impressed with this guy’s antics. The bear head in the fridge was funny as hell but it’s pretty clear that this kind of “satire” is not the best way to affect policy changes as I’m sure is the intent of Charles.

    Eminem speaks up finally.

    Well, they got me. Pwned.

  3. Eminem likes balls to the face. Not surprised.

  4. Borat was hilarious. Only movie snobs turned their noses up at that. Their loss.

Bruno has big shoes to fill and I’ve no doubt it will.

  5. Borat and Bruno are gods!

  6. It will definitely add hype for the film.

  7. Ha!
She’s already changed her story…said that they never touched her but she is so emotionally messed up that needs a wheelchair.
    whatever…

  8. Another one trying to get money out of an inconvenient, but clever, guy (Cohen) who knows how to exploit the world of the ordinary people and their values.
In the end, once again, only another case to increase the publicity of his film(s).

  9. You know, I guess the dumb “beotch” shouldn’t have tried to wrestle the mic back. I love seeing morons get their just desserts by thinking they’re big and bad and ending up in a wheelchair. I hope the judge is not too unlike judge judy and says “Well madam, did you try to grab the microphone?” – “Well yea… but…” “Shaddup madam! Your case is dismissed!”
