Thx for taking the time to point out the deficiences in my latest Treknobabble, El Diz. I think you had some good advice on how to explain my opinions so that a reader can determine if my reaction is based on expectations they share with me.

I admit I have a scatter-brained approach to writing, but I'll also admit that I hope that's part of the charm of my writing. Sometimes I'm not sure of how I feel and I hope that the reader can expend some effort and fill in the gaps for me. That's probably "bad writing" on my part, but that's the way I like to write.

Sorry if I insulted anyone with my opinions about how people react to reviews and other people's opinions. I wasn't specifically addressing people who disagreed with my opinions. I just noticed a preponderance of comments where readers had no tolerance of a movie reviewer's opinion or other readers' opinions. For example, look at the comments under any of the Twilight movie posts.

You’ve stated that the topic of this column is how people react to movie reviews. You also acknowledge that a lot of the reaction to your review of the new Trek film were more about them being incoherent messes than your opinion of the film. Which has been, and ever shall be, incomprehensible.

Unfortunately it goes off the rails almost immediately when you follow up the criticism that contributors and visitors to this site seem to judge other based on their taste in film, by rationalize your own judgement that those who enjoyed the new Trek film did so because it was stupid. Apparently it’s okay because people even smarter than you think we’re all idiots for liking any kind of Trek.

Then you talk about IDIC and insist that your inability to effectively formulate, communicate and defend your opinion is a defence mechanism for dealing with overly emotional and aggressive people, with a bizarre side trip into self-help techno-babble about conflict resolution.

Once you finally get back to the subject of movie reviews you start by misrepresenting the philosophy of Siskel and Ebert, who did not “relax their standards“ for genre pictures but understood that they needed to be judged on their own merits and not dismissed just because they weren‘t all Waiting for Godot.

Then you come back around to the Trek movie again, and continue to fail to fully develop or explain your opinions with specific examples.

Only two of your criticisms succeed in being legitimate - your nitpick that the time travel conceit is inconsistent with Trek lore (which you refuse to discuss further) and your preference that the film start with the crew already intact, like in the original series, instead of compressing the story of the crew coming together into such a short timeframe. Unfortunately you later contradict your prefence for the familiar formula by complaining that the film offered nothing new or fresh.

After claiming that the film upsets your “belief system” by ignoring Trek history while not giving any examples of what that “belief system” is or how it‘s being upset, you contradict yourself again by stating that you found the film’s many references to that history “pandering to nostalgia”.

The rest of opinions are stated without explanation or examples to support them. And yes, if you want to issue blanket statements about the film failing to meet your expectations, you have to explain what those expectations were, why they weren‘t met to your satisfaction and how they could‘ve been - that way the reader can determine if your reaction is based on expectations they share with you or not.

In the end, I don’t think you succeeded in your stated objective of exploring how people react to movie reviews. Instead you alternated between insulting those who criticise your writing and whiny self-justifications for why it’s so awful.

Sweetie, I understand - everyone and their tribble loves this movie but you, and that bothers you. Stop letting it - you don‘t have to like this movie. You don‘t even have to understand why you don‘t like this movie. You just have to stop trying to explain why you don‘t like this movie, because you suck at it.

People who disliked this latest Star Trek are just whiny little tools. That's all there is to it, so there's no point in defending yourself.

paum, glad you received the Star Trek toys and glasses. I wasn't sure they would survive passing over the border twice. :-) It sounds like you're a worthy recipient.

Go Reed! Don't let the kids get you down. On Craigslist I found a guy in my area that sells used DVD's for $2 each. So far I've bought at least 15 of them (on 3 or 4 occasions). I also like picking up used books at local libraries. I have four that I check out regularly. I hope you keep your bargain DVD review coming. As Spock should have said "hoooo-wah!"

Yeah, thx Superclerk. I thought it was admirable that they discussed the screenplay. I've seen various sites where they answered questions. Personally, I didn't like their answers. I can't think of an answer that satisfied me, but I'm probably using selective amnesia to justify my disappointment.

Maybe I should write a Treknobabble addressing their answers, but I think people have had enough of my stupid opinions concerning the new movie.

Yo Reed. In the second of the Trek episodes you mentioned that you would like to see the script writers come out and talk about the decisions made in the film. Well you now have what you wanted. Both of them are on a recent episode of the Creative Screen Writers Podcast found on iTunes. They talk about a lot of the issues you have with the movie and I think they do a good job defending themselves and the decisions made.

Peace out.

Paul Andrews, I hope you noted that I did mention multiculturalism in my next sentence. I did check out the Wikipedia entry to find out that in "Western English-speaking countries, multiculturalism as an official national policy started in Canada in 1971." Makes you wonder if Star Trek in the '60s had something to do with it.

Goon, I only used the word "hate" in my title for attention purposes.

Bob The Slob, I still haven't seen The Dark Knight. People must think I wear that as a "badge of distinction." I'm still waiting for it to get into the $5.00 bargain bin.

"In Star Trek, there is a concept known as Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC) that has come from the logically minded Vulcans. I suppose there must be an equivalent sociological concept that I am not aware of, but basically the concept emphasizes that everyone is different and that strength comes from integrating these differences rather than obliterating them."

Yes - it's called multiculturalism:

who needs Vulcans eh ?
