Who Isn’t Excited for a New Paul Verhoeven Movie?

Hard to believe, but it’s been almost 10 years since Paul Verhoeven made his last Hollywood film. Hollow Man may not have been his strongest effort, but I remember it being somewhat unfairly criticized because people thought the effects weren’t up to snuff. Either way, since then he has directed only one movie: Black Book, a World War II movie about a Jewish singer trying to survive in Nazi-occupied Holland. It is the most expensive Dutch film made to date, and was fairly well-received critically, even though some people were disappointed to see Verhoeven moving away from sci-fi to something a little more serious.
The good news is, Verhoeven isn’t ready to completely turn his back on Hollywood just yet. He has reportedly signed on to direct a thriller called The Surrogate (not to be confused with Jonathan Mostow’s Surrogates) for 20th Century Fox. Based on the book by Kathryn Mackel, it is about a couple who hire a surrogate mother to have a child for them, only to be faced with a tough decision when they find out that the mother has a dark and dangerous past. The script was written by Roderick Taylor and Bruce Taylor (The Brave One). While it’s probably no Robocop, it certainly sounds like this is something Verhoeven can sink his teeth into. Are you excited for a new Paul Verhoeven flick?

The Brave One was a pretty good film. I thought the writing was pretty smart in it. Count me in.
Posted by Kurt on May 29th, 2009Love Verhoeven and will always remember seeing Soldier of Orange with Rutger Hauer. I rented it after seeing Robocop and thought this Director is pretty cool. Didn’t know it was made in 77 but he has been a really fascinating director since then…though the Hollow Man was really Hollywood bland. But the guy has the right stuff and would love to see a new Verhoeven movie!

Posted by Pr1mal on May 29th, 2009The “dark and dangerous past” of the mother that you refer to better be that she’s carrying Quado’s child. Otherwise I won’t be interested until I see a trailer. But seriously, Starship Troopers and Total Recall are two of my favorite Sci-Fi movies and I would strongly welcome his return… As long as it’s to hardcore Sci-fi action.
