New Buffy The Vampire Slayer Movie Franchise in Development?
After Buffy The Vampire Slayer went off the air in 2003, there was a lot of talk of continuing the story on the big screen. Unfortunately, that never came to pass, possibly because Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t interested and Joss Whedon was busy with other projects, but the show’s eighth season has since been continued in comic book form. This week, however, it was announced that Buffy may return to the big screen in another form entirely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fran Rubel Kuzui, director of the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie, is looking to put together a relaunch of the movie franchise that would be unrelated to the TV series. Whedon, who also wrote the script for the original movie, probably will not be involved in this reboot, although they have yet to rule him out entirely. The idea is to introduce a brand new cast of characters under the grounds that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. In a way it’s unfortunate because Sarah Michelle Gellar’s career could probably use a franchise or two right about now.
Kuzui had this to say: “Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this.” Yeah, vampires are in… we get it. Personally I have a soft spot for the original movie and I never really got into the TV series so I’d be willing to give this a shot. The question is, what will all the hardcore Whedon fans have to say about it?

I think it would be awesome. I am a huge fan of the tv show and I loked the movie. I would love to see the tv show continued in a movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar. But I could do for a dose of anything…

It would be great if some indy filmmaker just did a straight-up sequel starring Kristy Swanson. Donald Sutherland could return in a cameo as a ghostly voice or apparition of her dead mentor. She could be searching for a successor and then get slain after she finds one.

Buffy still has a lot of fans and it seems to me including Whedon/Gellar would be the best way to make money, which is all this project is about. It also happens to be the only way this movie has any hopes of being GOOD.

I really don’t see the point of bringing it back when some of the most important elements aren’t coming back. No Whedon? No SMG? No point.

There’s a very good reason the first film was unsuccessful at starting a franchise and a good reason why Joss basically disowned it and created the T.V. series. Whatever fan base the series has will turn on it without the series principals involved, plus I’d personally rather season season 8 brought to the big screen.

Fans of this franchise and others can’t seem to get over replacing the original stars. I think the Star Trek movie shows that the majority don’t care.
In a book called “The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived,” published in 2006, Buffy comes in at #44. Capt. Kirk and Spock come in at #50! If you’re wondering, at #1 is the Marlboro Man. The authors admit that the ranking is subjective, but Buffy does seem to have a large influence.

The magic was with Whedon’s writing, directing and vision for the series. The cast was great, no doubt, but I daresay Joss Whedon could pull off a new Buffy movie or TV series with an all new cast.

No Joss and no Sarah! I am a fan of the TV show, and continue to fill the void by reading it in comic form. I saw the original movie when it first came out, and I do remember falling asleep halfway through. As a fan of Buffy and everything else Joss, I am very certain that without the key elements of chemistry ie: Buffy, the scoobies, the movie will only be a blatant effort to cash in on the Twilight craze. Pathetic! Corporate greed pretty much can suck the beauty out of anything. BTW…I saw the Star Trek prequel, it was nice but not really reminicent of the message Gene Rodenberry had worked his entire writing career to build. However, it was a really cool JJ Abrams producation. I left feeling oddly unsatisfied, like when you eat chips for dinner and afterward you are neiither nourished, nor fed, but rather thirsty.

I think the concept of a new primary slayer to focus on is a great idea (SMG had her chance and chose to end it all, oh well). I hope they hold true to the fact that there are in fact many slayers now. Also, how great would it be to include some cameos once in a while!!

I think the Season 8 Comics are amazing and I think a movie that is steering in a different direction could be cool. I personally don’t even mind the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t doing it. At all. I think it’s shitty that she never gave it a second thought to do it earlier when the show is what put her out there in the first place. If anything, she should have done as a “thank you” to fans. But I’m pumped. I just hope it’s dark.

I think that if they really want to make this work they need to cast the television show cast and Joss. If they don;t do that they need to rename the movie “(new slayer name)the vampire slayer” and leave the Buffy name behind altogether.
I as a fan from the beginning cannot see Buffy as anyone other then SMG. Sorry I am not even a huge fan of hers but I have to admit she owned that role and no one can play that role and make it believable to me.

It would be a totally differen movie/show. And if it isn’t phenomanal, it will get slammed by fans who expect to be as good as the original, which is a tall order. The writing would have to be amazing, and the actors would need extreme talent, as the previous ones did. also, it would be a good idea to have at least one charcter from the original. And propbaly several writers .from the show

Buffy is awesome the way it is, and it’s over, and it had a good ending, so drop it because it is obvious beyond doubt that any idea they have without Joss Whedon is going to suck, and ruin the amazingness of Buffy that had maintained itself for so long. I get it, we miss Buffy, but that won’t do anything but make you upset. Try Whedon’s new show Dollhouse starring Eliza Dushku. If they make a new movie, they make it. It may suck. I did not get into Firefly so much, but Dollhouse is really getting good, let’s hope they don’t axe it like they did with Tru Calling!!! (That was f***king annoying as Tur Calling was getting so good!!!!)
The original Buffy movie was an absaloute mess, a piece of s***t! Whedon made the TV series with such passion, humour and talent that it became such a fantasatic series and had SUCH a cult following, it still has.
If the new movie has the original cast or at least some of them for cameo appearances and is made my Joss Whedon or at least heavily infuluenced by him, then it will be great!!!! Anyone else agree? Co’mon guys!!!

It will ruin everything Joss has done. I know the orginal movie was not made to Whedons liking (even with his involvement) and without him I can only guess it will once again dissapoint drastically. Leave Buffy alone with just the memories of the original series, the way Joss intented the whole franchise to be. Unless he and all the original members from the show decide to make a movie…not interested. And all true Buffy and Joss fans should agree and rally to only see it if Joss and series cast do it, and do it right!!!

Sarah was the ultimate Buffy, gorgeous, sassy with a fabulous high kick!!! I’m all for a movie, and I’m all for making it different to the TV show… my idea is an undescoverd potential that came into her powers is confused and is under attack from some big evil, and the Buffy cast are all high and mighty with Sarah as the head, and they have to train her, and the evil is too big and Buffy has to come out of retirement reluctantly- it would be amazing!!!!!!

How can you not have the cast from the tv show?
Not just SMG but what about Nick (xander) or allison (willow) or even david! (Angel) they are staples you can’t have buffy without willow, xander, gyles, angel, or spike….didn’t the first movie prove that?
Its such a complex story to grasp that you can’t cut it down to a 2 hour movie about a cheerleader that can slay vampires.
Plus if they hire any knowns or disney channel ”actors” then I can bet no btvs tv show fans will even bother to watch it….

Angel ended with an apocolypse and an open ending. Just finish it off with Spike and Angel saving the world with the help of Buffy and the super slayers……It could be great…..
But they will probably hire Disney actors to continue it and make it a joke…….

Sarah Michelle Gellar may have made Buffy a household name, but she is by no means the original Buffy. That was Kristy Swanson, who was great in the role. I’m really looking forward to seeing who they get to be the new buffy. Its exciting, its change! Im picturing Hayden Panettiere??
The show was fantastic i loved it, but it ran its course, and the cast of the series are definitely way too old to reprise their roles in any format. It just wouldn’t work. Nick Brendan is in his 40s! Xander would be about 28/29 now. It wouldn’t make any sense.
Who cares if Joss Whedon writes it or not. Its only a movie. We get the gist of what Buffy is all about. Maybe the new writers will put a different spin on it? Why do people always just write things off without giving them a chance?? Its really sad. It was only atv show. Get over it.
Heh, good point Sean. Hayden would be a very interesting role for Buffy. However, you are kind of missing the bigger picture. I guess I can be considered a hard core fan but I also love a good action flick. A re-imagining could probably be epic like the Star Trek movie was. But the Buffy series is still going on. Granted that is in comic book form but still with Joss Wheden at the helm. With that “Universe” still alive a new movie and cast will not touch well with the crazy hardcore fans and will not have the important fan base(as I said before I’m a hardcore fan but not a crazy hardcore fan). I personaly can’t wait to see a real vampire on the big screen because those fake Twilight vamps are total posers. I mean walking outside in the sun light and not one person tries to stake them?? I think we need a slayer back. ANY SLAYER.

Now don’t get me wrong I enjoy the original movie in itself, but you have to remember that there is alot of history in the tv series and has set most of the boundries and laws within the buffy universe. There is a considerable diffrence in the legend and folk lore of the original movie and its tv spin off. In the tv series vampires turn to dust when they are staked in the heart…verses in the original movie Buffy can stake a vampire and he dances around saying it hurts till he finally falls over. Now the original movie has been worked into the series by the comic books. They even explain what happens to Pike and all this was supervised by Whedon, even the original movie was writen by him, so if he is not in any part of this new movie it has no right to be made. As well I understand that most of the cast is getting up in age, but if you think about it Brenden played a 16 year old when he was 25, so even if they have a flash to present time during the movie they could have the cast be in it, considering they still look younger then they really are. As well a new cast can be brought in especially if its a remake, but making Buffy like Kristy Swanson is a retarded idea. Considering kristy swanson played a horrible Buffy complaired to SMG. sure ditzy was part of the story at the begining, but kristy was overly ditzy and with the rest of the story it just made the story into a spoof, verses SMG and the rest of the TV show cast made it more believeable as a horror story placed within a drama with its comedic moments. I’m not against people that love the original buffy, but those that haven’t watched the tv show and are putting it down, should at least look at Whedon’s more developed work and give the TV show its own credits considering once again this movie would never been thought of to be remade if it hadn’t had such a fallowing from the TV series fans.

I love the whole idea of bringing back buffy the vampire slayer and that it wont be with the scubby gang but focus on a different generation but i hope they know that the tv serious put more perspective to the movie cause honestly the movie sucked ass!!!!!! Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv serious had character and story lines that actually fit and mad sense through the entire seven years on air! if they do this looking at a different generation i hope they know they have to do it before Buffy casue there is no longer just on slayer now! its who ever was a potential slayer or those who might be choosen are now a slayer so there is no longer “the”. i saw take it from the end and progressing it from there.

There certainly ‘HAS’ to be a transitional period to introduce new characters within the old character frame-work. I’d love to see a new BUFFY spin, and it is IMPERATIVE that Whedon is ON BOARD to keep HIS vision alive!!! Now is the perfect time to be making this. Fans deserve and want to see more of the original cast and it can be transitioned to a new cast to spawn a completely new spin-off TV series. I for sure ould watch it and buy the DVD’s!!!

A theatre movie would most definately be a B/O smash with the fan base alone going to see it!!
The original Buffy movie was a terrible flop and any kind of resurrection in that regard would be a ‘nail in the coffin’ of the Buffy franchise for sure!!!
No, to making a sequal to the original, and a big ‘HELL YEAH’ to continuing the series as a movie.
Original cast is eseential. And bring Spike back from LA. Without the same people, it wouldn’t be a Buffy film.

The movie was campy, but adorable, and the show… /sigh I force my fiancee to watch it with me nearly every night. But the actors from the tv show are a little past their prime to play butt kicking slayers/witches/watchers/zeppos. Not to mention many of them are on to their own projects. SMJ has a baby on the way and a new show in the works, Alyson Hannigan has How I Met Your Mother… If people want to cash in on the vampire craze brought on from /shudders Twilight and Trueblood, they need to do it in way that won’t wig out us die hard fans.
Pick up where the series left off, with the council in shambles and a handful of freshly activated Slayers. Focus on remaking the council, and training the ever growing group of slayers, and finding new watchers to handle them. Pick 3 or so girls to focus the main entity of the show on, with cameos of the original tv cast. This way us die hards won’t run if fear like a freshly risen vamp running from Harmony.

The movie is watchable because it reminds me of my childhood, but the show in all honesty was in a completely different league. The actors had amazing chemistry and a poetic and beautifully written script for every episode. To think that Whedon, SMG, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, and others involved won’t be taking part is madness. They made the show what it was and they were all the reasons why it lasted so long. Bringing in new people is probably the worst idea i’ve ever heard – the fandom thrives on the characters they know and love; how are they going to have that same relationship with new characters? It really makes no sense.

Show, I can appreciate the campiness and 90’s etiquette of the movie but it never got me excited. I was always more the TV fan. To those who say the show was shallow really cannot have watched every episode. Ergo Hush, The Gift and especially The Body showed that Buffy was anything but camp by the time the TV show was airing. Whedon’s ability to create pop culture references, give humanity to utlimately heartless creatures and keep the show going really tells us what he can bring when he is given due control to what he wants to do.
Therefore I have NO interest in this movie. My problem is I could somehow understand if it was a continuation of the show or even a remake of the original but without any of the original cast, more notably Sarah Michelle Gellar how can you call it Buffy? SMG is Buffy without her that title becomes defunct in itself.
Another fear is given the amount of shows being ‘Twi-lighted’ at the moment (even the remake of The Howling seems to be taking that direction) how much can we bet this is what will happen to the film? Personally Kuzui did a nice fluffy piece of film but nothing more, since then they disappeared into obscurity. Suggestion tells me they plan to bring it back because they desire that limelight again, I do not think for one minute she cares about the concept just about the money which saddens me.
The fact there is no word of Whedon being in this rings major alarm bells. He was Buffy, the original movie he wanted was stolen from beneath him and the show gave him the chance to do what he wanted. Without him you are flogging a deadhorse. No word on any of the original staff? So I must assume we will get the most talked of actress lately? Every sign points to big bucks and little heart.
Until I hear that Whedon supports this or that the cast of the original show might be coming in, I have no interest. The person doing this does not care for Buffy and chances are it will show on the day. Bring back a franchise, loved by millions and see what happens. There will be little love for this movie and that is the case with me too.
Sorry I want something original, not something redone because the person wants back into the limelight. Not interested, couldn’t care less. Kuzui give me a reason to, or you are sailing dangerous waters. The worst idea literally I have heard in some time! Rant finished.

Start out with a mini series then maybe go to a motion picture. Still, it hase to have the same cast.

So yah…..the orginal movie was awesome as it was teen vampire fluff, really good stuff. The show was awesome because it emphasized more on the whole fate/destiny thing and also worked more with the feminist aspect (sorry, the movie not so much, a bit ‘girl power’ but really, ask a guy and they’ll say it was about the tights and hot blond chick). I feel that if Joss were to come back it would not only find the shows fans heading to theaters, but it would give the story more dimension than the movie brought to the table. Keep in mind it was Joss’ original idea. Not only that, but making a new buffy movie without joss or sarah…it’s like making a FRIENDS movie without Jennifer Aniston…just not plausible.

Now a movie comes a long, a Buffy movie, I remember reading an interview with Joss Whedon in it that said that when Buffy was originally on the Big Screen he had no say on what happened with the movie, they took his vision for Buffy and completly ruined his vision. That’s why I don’t feel a new Buffy would work.
That’s why I don’t believe that the fans of the show would accept it, because you are ripping one of the elements that made the show work and you turning them to dust (no pun intended)
It was the writing, the chemistry of the chast, and the atmosphere that made the show work, without these elements you get a parodie.

I was totally ecstatic because as much as I love me some Edward Cullen, Angel was my first true vampire love. And as Joss himself said there is no Edward Cullenus. So the prospect of getting more Buffy/Angel angst just tickled me from head to toe. Then I heard the most horrifying thing in the ‘verse: No Joss, No Sarah, No David. That is essentially no Buffy, which then points out the pointlessness of making a new Buffy movie. Joss was so depressed about how badly they screwed up the movie that he made sure he had almost total control over the TV show. It is blasphemy to even speak of a Buffy movie with out the Scoobies, Buffy and Angel. But it is down right sacrilegious heresy to even attempt to make a Buffy movie without Joss. HELLO!!!! Joss created her, he knows her thought process and reactions. He wrote her for now over almost 10 years and these pompous SOB’s are trying to take something so sacred and precious to us die hard Buffy fans and make a mockery of it for what? To ride on the coattails of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries? Ugh this is the kind of crap that makes me want to go out and knock some sense into idiots. Just because you directed the original movie which most Whedonists don’t even consider true cannon doesn’t mean you get to come and desecrate Joss’s true vision. These guys need to be staked.

With a lot of buffy fans, they already have a market for the movie,if,the characters will remain the same. Its ok to put new characters but without Willow, Xander, Angel and Faith would be pointless. It would keep the Buffy fanatics (including me) happy, it would get younger new people interested, it would satisfy the directors and what not (being able to use the Buffy universe), new actors wouldn’t have to worry that they’re doing an old, loved character right, the can make it there own and different, and seriously, Whedon would be the best to have, of course, BUT, if he didn’t want to (don’t know why) but he wouldn’t see his show and characters go down in flames. Posted by Brien' on August 18th, 2010Guys, I am as massive a Buffy fan as the next self respecting homo and would love nothing more than to see even just one big screen extravaganza! Whedon does not need to direct, but he DOES have to develop the screenplay. Some of the characters are also not required, but it is ESSENTIAL to have Gellar as Buffy, Head as Rupert, Brendon as Xander and Hannigan as Willow. These four characters are the cast that can’t be changed or altered in any way. The film could easily be a vehicle to bring in a new cast leading to a new TV fanchise, but a film has to satisfy the old fans too. We hear the new franchise argument compared to the recent Star Trek film. Poppycock! The series went through many changes and incarnations over the years and lets face it, the new film was more a simulation of the franchise of the ORIGINAL series and films. Now, let me think, how many years are between them? Buffy is too recent to be thinking of a rebirth unless with the original cast. So Kuzui if you want a film then give us the four main original cast and bring in a new team to take on a new (almost unrelated tv franchise). This way you please us original fans and open up the Buffy world to a new series. Please have Whedon on the script to the film to, if you don’t we will know and will hate you for it. You have a massive fanbase to satisfy and also to thank for your success and we deserve some respect. You can’t follow these suggesstions then JUST FORGET IT!

If they are going to do it they need the original cast and Whedon. If they can’t get either THEN DON’T MAKE THIS MOVIE!!!

Everything is a remake and nobody comes up with their own material and ends up ruining original things that were great to begin with. If this new movie is made, then Buffy the Vampire Slayer the tv show will lose it’s class. Because people who haven’t seen the show will go see the new movie. And if it’s horrible, they will never give the show a chance and people will think Buffy is a big joke. And it’s not. Leave original characters, movies, and shows alone. If you make a movie about a slayer, don’t even name her Buffy. Have it be completely different.
Posted by Lindsay on October 9th, 2010Saw the movie when it camo out, i like it. But to say it was better than the tv show. Look at what it made in the box office. Now look at what a differnt take did on TV. No offense to Almost everyone that even knows of Buffy knows of SMG and lot don’t even know of the movie version let alone the actress KS that played Buffy in it. The end result has aleady been proven.Now if you just want to throw out another vampire move for those that know “VAMPIRES DO NOT SPARKLE” no matter what version,yes i did like Twilght except that,let the new “Buffy Movie” not be like the old movie. One more example remember how long the “silly tv version of “Batman Forever” did. Proof that even big name cant keep crap afloat “Forever”.

Posted by ashley on November 27th, 2010I love buffy, I’ve been a fan for years now. I still watch the show on DVD. If your going to remake Buffy without SMG and Whedon. Then you better have something amazing, it better blow our minds. You can’t help if SMG dont want a part in it, but you can make sure that they story line and people that will star in it will be amazing. They all have some big shoes to fill. And for people that haven’t seen buffy, you cant just start it out how you want. you got to start from the beginning. I hope you dont mess it up!
Posted by Samantha on January 12th, 2011I personely love the Buffy series. I grew up with it because my aunt would watch it, she was 19 at the time. My grandparents gave me a couple videos of it. Later I found it on TV on Logo, and started to record it.
Posted by Angelee on January 17th, 2011I have never seen any other episode besides the first series:) I think that if they do this they should bring back Faith, Willow, Kennedy, Xander, Giles and Principle Wood and maybe Angel.
They should also kind of make it about Buffy but I thought “Why doesn’t she have a daughter who turns 13 or 14, that becomes the knew slayer after the first few episodes. Have Buffy die in a battle against another Uber-vampire.”
Make it about her daughter, and the friends and family she left behind, but do NOT bring her back to life. If they did this it would reach the teens or now parents audience, along with the teens now. I’m gonna love it, but i loved the old series too, especially since i was born the year they made the first real episodes:)
Just please please don’t mess it up! or else you will make a lot of people mad, who believed in you!!!!!!
I’m disappointed that they would do this without Joss Whedon. He created this amazing world and these amazing characters. It will not be the same without him. We all saw what happened to the first movie when he was no longer involved. Yes, I own it and love it in its own right, it is NOTHING compared to the show. This will take away from the seven years of television history. People that have never seen the show will see the movie and base assumptions on that, which if it sucks, will be disappointing. And when they compared to making it a franchise like Twilight, I almost died. Comparing the two is terrible. If they’re going to redo Buffy, do it the correct way.
Posted by Tegan on January 22nd, 2011there comes a time when an actor and his/her character start to become the same person, not only for them but for the people that have the pleasures of watching them. It is kind of ridiculous to make a “Buffy” movie with out the person that IS Buffy. No offense Mr. to Kuzui but did you see what he did the first time with the Buffy movie. In my opinion they should totally roll over the characters into the movie, they left the last episode of the t.v. show SO open and it’d be great to see someone elaborate on what they think happened once there wasn’t just ONE slayer anymore. On top of all of that audience are only going to have in their mind the fact that there is not just ONE slayer anymore but Willow, Buffy, and the rest of the gang got rid of that when they had their final battle with the first. To each his own I guess if someone wants to waste the money on producing and creating some like this than there isn’t really any stopping them.

Posted by michael on July 24th, 2011All I can say is no way! No Joss, no Sarah, no David or James, no Buffy The Vampire Slayer, period. I hate lt when people try to continue something but replace all of the characters. They’re doing this with Avatar: The Last Airbender & I can’t stand lt. Buffy must either continue with the original cast or live on in history.
