Flight of the Navigator Remake on the Way

flightofthenavigatorremake

When I was a kid, Flight of the Navigator was easily one of my favourite movies. At the time, it was right up there with Explorers in terms of family-friendly sci-fi adventure flicks, although I haven’t rewatched it recently to see if it holds up. Looks like I won’t need to though since Disney is apparently in the process of remaking it.

The weird thing is, my first thought at seeing this headline was that this remake had been previously announced… I guess it just goes to show how out of control the remake train is right now. Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs, Arrested Development) has been hired to write the script for the new version, which will still be about a kid who gets abducted by aliens and then returns 8 years later with no memory of what happened. All I know is that Paul Reubens better reprise his role as the voice of the ship’s computer or else I’m gonna totally lose it. (Not really, but hey it’s worth a shot.) What do you think, does Flight of the Navigator deserve a remake?

  1. NO.

  2. Im with you Sean, Flight of the Navigator was one of my favourites growing up and I like the fact its getting remade, as long as its not too CG heavy because apart from the ship I don’t think the film needs to be. And I don’t understand Slashfilm I think it is, that’s so against it. It looks very dated and I thought the story was awesome when I was young. So yeah, make that shit!

  3. That kid was a wuss

  4. I’ve never even heard of this film before today.

  5. Compliance!!

  6. I enjoyed the original and am curious to see what becomes of this.

  7. Round, round, get around, I GET AROUND – YEAH!

  8. I loved the original as a kid. If the remake sucks I’ll just ignore it.

  9. Here’s the question: in the original movie, the robot eventually sounds like Pee-wee Herman. That’s so completely outdated that it wouldn’t make any sense to do that now so what will they do instead?

  10. Hi, I totally love this film, I own two copies both NTSC and PAL, I absoloutley love this film and am terribly excited to see it being remade, why they just didn’t make a sequal is beyond me maybe the actors are to old to make a sequal. Hopefully the remake will take off and they will make a sequal, Ide love to see David return to phaelon and meet the highly intelligent aliens who took him in the first place. The puppets should be able to be better this time around to and they better make a nice ship, its one of the few films you actually get to see inside the space ship. I will be definatley going to see it at the movies as missed it the first time around at theaters, I will also be buying a copy of the remake when it comes out on DVD. Big thumbs up for the remake

  11. YES
    I’m so escited!

  12. Why do they have to keep butchering everything great from my childhood?! Does no one have an original thought left? Just wait, the Goonies will be next… Is nothing sacred?…

  13. When and if the remake of Flight of the Navigator is done, I sure hope the math problem is included. Kids love it when you work the time / distance problem on the computers calculator. Distance to Phaelon; 560 light years. Travel time; 2.2 hrs. How fast was Max going? 1,493,086,254,545,454.5 miles and hour. Or 254.5 light years per hour. Working out what a light year is in miles is also part of it. Kids love it.

  14. Just rented the film to watch with my 8 year old. He loved it and I loved watching it with him again after all these years. Still holds up and I really enjoyed the way the hero was allowed to be a kid in the film, tears and all, not some savvy mini adult like most kids are portrayed these days. I hope the producers remember that it isn’t the special effects that made this movie a classic, but the relationships, the fantasy of time travel and the fear that the hero feels when he realizes that he can’t go home. Keeping my fingers crossed for Disney, but not holding my breath.

  15. …anybody know the status of the remake?

    Thanks.
