Kevin Smith Working on a Hockey Movie with Oscar Potential?

If you were following Kevin Smith on Twitter at all last month and saw the endless stream of tweets about the New Jersey Devils’s ill-fated playoff run, it should come as no surprise that the man is a fan of hockey. He’s also taking part in the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament in Brantford, Ontario next month, and although hockey has been featured in many of his previous films (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) it seems that he may finally be working up to directing an entire movie about hockey.

Smith says that he has recently been in discussions with author Mitch Albom regarding a song that Albom co-wrote with the late Warren Zevon. It’s called “Hit Somebody”, and the lyrics tell the bittersweet story of “a hockey player who just wants to play hockey, who loves hockey so much, but just sucks at it. The only thing he can do to be on a team is just be the enforcer, just be the guy who goes out there and beats the s— out of people.” Smith hopes to turn this story into a feature film, possibly as his next project following A Couple of Dicks.

Clearly this would almost be like his version of Slapshot, which is ironic considering that a Slapshot remake is currently in the works. Either way, I’d probably see this movie, and so would everyone else in Canada. The weird thing is, Smith seems to think that the movie may actually have Oscar-potential: “If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie.” Hmm… why do I get the feeling that he is thinking of casting Mickey Rourke in the lead? Maybe Bruce Springsteen can re-record the song for the soundtrack too. Is this a good career move for Kevin Smith? Do you think he can direct a solid hockey movie?

  1. I think its a little dangerous for any filmmaker to think of awards before the film is even made.

  2. Kevin Smith is fading away into oblivion… fast.

  3. Is Seth Rogan in this what movie is that pic from?

  4. That pic is from “Zack and Miri.”

Anyone still listening to Smodcast? It has been so bad lately.

  5. I almost dropped him on Twitter because of the endless hockey tweets, but I kept him. Will Weaton didn’t make it though.

  6. I’ve been listening to SModcast lately. I dont know, I liked the Fame discussion. One thing though, is Kevin Smith is probably way to open, even for me. Hearing him talk about being a 6 year old and having an older kid force him and a girl (which of course he names) do sexual stuff to each other… a bit much.

  7. He’s also been a wreck since the failure(?) of Zack and Miri. He’s baked off his ass in every episode, and he is less and less funny with each passing episode. It’s sad, really, because I think he is now finally realizing that his well has run dry.
