Stallone’s Cliffhanger Getting a Reboot Not a Sequel

Last year, hot on the heels of Stallone’s fourth Rambo film, there was a rumour going around that he might be in talks to star in a sequel to his 1993 film Cliffhanger. While that didn’t seem to pan out, this week we have news of a Cliffhanger remake that’s happening instead — or, excuse me, a “reboot”. StudioCanal is partnering with producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious) to make this dream a reality.
“Just as they rebooted Star Trek, we’re going to do the same with Cliffhanger,” Moritz said. Right. Just like Star Trek. Is it really a reboot if no one cares about it and if there aren’t immediate plans to turn it into a franchise? I think the involvement of Stallone is the only thing that would interest people in this project in the first place. They’re looking to set the remake in multiple locations (as opposed to just the Rockies, although the original was actually shot in Italy), all they need is a screenwriter to get things rolling. Moritz is apparently also still plugging away at the Escape from New York remake. Do you have any interest in a Cliffhanger remake?

Just let go of the cliff and let it fall and die. Though sometimes a turd can polish up nice. I would rather see a reboot of Shoot to kill. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096098/
Posted by BigHungry on May 14th, 2009Studios might as well hire multiple directors to film his/her version of a script and then release them all at the same time.
“Opening in theatres this week: Tony Scott’s Ice Pirates, Martin Scorsese’s Ice Pirates, Kathryn Bigelow’s Ice Pirates, and the mathematical romantic comedy Why Numbers Count.â€

no.
Posted by Bob The Slob on May 14th, 2009I am only interested in it if Rucker and Frank return and Frank has that painting where the banana is eating the man.
Posted by Ian on May 14th, 2009GimmeCookies, I’ve had the same thought as you for a while now. I mentioned to Jay that I would love to direct a film simultaneously, with him and I using the same actors and same sets to save costs. It would be interesting also if Jay and I took the same script, but then went our own ways, hiring our own crew and actors.

Next they’ll be remaking–oh wait–rebooting (FTW!?!) something like Demolition Man. Then they’ll reboot the Speed franchise.
This Neal Moritz fellow needs to stay off the crystal meth.

Posted by Stephen on May 14th, 2009CAN YOUR REALLY RE-BOOT A SINGULAR FILM?!?!?
Posted by Bob The Slob on May 14th, 2009Bob: Yeah I thought the same thing, although I guess they did it with Hulk / Incredible Hulk.
Posted by Sean on May 14th, 2009Why does this need to be remade as a reboot of ‘Cliffhanger’? Can’t they just make another mountain climbing thriller with a different name? Like “Deadly Peaks” or “Cliffs of Danger”. There’s some good names.
Posted by Joel on May 15th, 2009Or Kill-a-man-jarro.
Posted by Matt on May 15th, 2009I’ll never understand the fall of Renny Harlin. The guy had talent!

Posted by entertainmenttodayandbeyond on May 15th, 2009@Matt :: haha, yeah, Jaro could be the name of the badguy.
Posted by Joel on May 16th, 2009Thanks Joel,
Posted by Matt on May 17th, 2009Jaro could be a deposed African Dictator who is hiding in the mountains to escape his war-crimes tribunal. So, Sly, while doing some climbing get caught up in the middle of it all. The thing writes itself.
Awesome. There has been a dearth of movies with stalactite-related deaths.
