Watchmen: Director’s Cut DVD Coming in July

watchmendvd

Hey, remember back in February when the Watchmen hype had reached a fever pitch, and Zack Snyder started talking about his 3 hour and 10 minute director’s cut of the film that he hoped would be re-released in theatres in the summer? Yeah, it looks like that probably isn’t happening anymore. Watchmen did very well at the box office, but not nearly as well as Warner Brothers and Fox were hoping (it has the 6th highest domestic gross for 2009 so far). Instead they will be rushing the movie to DVD in July, with both a single-disc theatrical cut and a 2-disc director’s cut planned.

While the single-disc release will be barebones, they’ve announced the following special features with the director’s cut:

  • The Phenomenon: The Comic That Changed Comics featurette
  • 30 minutes of Video Journals
  • My Chemical Romance – “Desolation Row” music video
  • Digital Copy of the Theatrical Version
  • Real Super Heroes, Real Vigilantes featurette (Blu-ray only)
  • Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World featurette (Blu-ray only)
  • 30 minutes of Watchmen Focus Points (Blu-ray only)
  • Warner Bros. Maximum Movie Mode (Blu-ray only)

Based on what we’ve seen Warner Brothers do for 300, and based on the limited extras (ie. no audio commentary or deleted scenes), it’s probably a safe assumption that there will also be some sort of Ultimate Collector’s Edition before Christmas. Keep that in mind. Still I am curious to see the extra 25 minutes of footage that Snyder cut for the theatrical release. Watchmen hits stores on July 21st… will you be picking it up?

  1. I think those covers are really shitty

  2. I’ll be waiting until they splice the director’s cut with the Tales of the Black Freighter. Then I’ll think about buying it.

  3. If they don’t include the standard cut with the BD then I’ll be waiting on that inevitable special edition. This is the same retardation that is happening with the LOTR set–they will be releasing the extended editions separately–AGAIN. I fucking hate that.

  4. I’ll wait for the version that has the Super-Woven-Extended-Edition and the Theatrical Version in one package.

  5. I agree with Drew– those covers, if they are the actual slip covers, suck. I don’t think I’ll be ready to watch this thing again by July anyhow, so I’ll wait for the special edition…

  6. I like the cover for the single disc, but the director’s cut cover is crappy.

I will be buying it the first day it comes out

  7. It sucks that I need this DVD so much, i gotta buy it as soon as it’s out next month but then I’ll have to buy it again when the extended version comes out. However, as someone who has 3 different versions of the book i’m used to wasting (?) money on Watchmen :)
