This Week on DVD: Taken, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, S. Darko

Looks like it’s another slow week for DVD releases, but fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) studios are increasing their Blu-ray output to make up for it. Major discs hitting stores today include Taken (The Extended Edition!) and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans… not so major discs include direct to DVD flicks The Grudge 3 and Donnie Darko sequel S. Darko. On Blu-ray we have Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy and Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection, a couple of James Bond flicks, Fargo, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. See anything worth picking up?

  1. tsk tsk, you forgot the Dana Carvey show.

  2. Fixed… thanks Goon.

  3. Matt gave a lot of love to THE DANA CARVEY show on this weeks Cinecast. I like Carvey, it’s too bad his film career was D.O.A.

  4. I liked Clean Slate and Opportunity Knocks when they came out. Sure they were actually crap now.

Anyways TDCS is by no means a perfect show especially by todays standards. For me though it along with Marilyn Manson and Norm MacDonald, are my time capsule for 1996. Shout Factory is in some ways a Criterion Collection for neglected TV shows that werent given their due and its no surprise they were the ones who finally put this out. Of course a lot of the political humor on the show is dated now too.

Overally its to the worlds benefit that the show was canceled. If it had stayed on Charlie Kaufman (one of the main writers) would not have so quickly gone on to do better things, Colbert would not have made Strangers With Candy and moved on to the Daily Show, who knows about Carell. Louis CK and Dino (Mr. Show, Morel Orel) were also on board. Robert Smigel too.

The great thing about TDCS for those in the know is certain particular sketches that were as good as the best you get on SNL but nobody saw (and those still hold up), and knowing (yeah I guess theres some necessary perspective here) that this was on right after Home Improvement – way too edgy for a 1996 8:30pm show. it was biting the corporate sponsor that fed them (each episode was “the Mountain Dew Dana Carvey Show” or “the Taco Bell Dana Carvey Show” – all Pepsi products) and they paid for it eventually.

I know Greg was excited for it too – its all about specific memories for me – the Stupid Pranksters, Skinheads from Maine, Waiters Disgusted by Food, Grandma the Clown, and more.

  8. What an absolute waste of time. Chris Fisher has no directing chops and Nate you suck as a screenwriter. A pile of boring junk.
