New Bruno Viral Meinspace Ad

One of the things that helped make Borat such a big success was the brilliant guerrilla marketing campaign that involved Sacha Baron Cohen making public appearances in character as Borat. People were quoting Borat catch phrases before the movie had even hit theatres, and there’s no question that a lot of the early support started online. Well, now it looks like they’re trying to do the same thing for Bruno, but unfortunately, I don’t think the viral marketing works for this character quite so well.
Last week a short viral ad was released on MySpace (or as Bruno calls it, “Meinspace”) in an effort to promote the film and to encourage people to add Bruno as a friend. Although they’re trying hard to generate some quotable one-liners for Bruno, it just seems too forced and not very funny if you ask me. Don’t get me wrong, I still think the movie will be great, but the marketing just isn’t as effective this time around. Now before you accuse Bruno of being behind the times, he is also on Twitter, although the updates are kind of hit and miss. What do you think, did Sacha Baron Cohen and his marketing team drop the ball on this?
