Katie Holmes to Star in Guillermo Del Toro’s Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Over the past few years we’ve been seeing Katie Holmes in the tabloids and on celebrity gossip blogs a lot more than we’ve been seeing her on the big screen, but I guess that’s to be expected when you’re the mother of Tom Cruise’s baby. She did appear in Mad Money and an episode of Eli Stone last year though, and now she’s got a new thriller lined up from Guillermo Del Toro aka The Busiest Director on the Planet. The movie is called Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, and it was scripted by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins (Mimic), but based on a 1973 made-for-TV flick.
The story revolves around a young couple and their daughter who move into an old house that is “inhabited by small demon-like creatures”. The movie will be helmed by Troy Nixey, another up and comer described as a “Del Toro protege”. Guillermo Del Toro seems to be mentoring a lot of people lately; it was reported earlier this week that he would oversee production on Mama, a horror film by Spanish directors Andy and Barbara Muschietti. He also had a similar role in Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Orphanage, and is now producing Bayona’s next film, Hater. Check out a trailer for Troy Nixey’s short film Latchkey’s Lament below, which apparently captures the tone that Del Toro wants for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.

We’ll never see anything from Del Toro again because this is the project that finally made him explode.

Posted by Rick on May 7th, 2009I’ve always said Katie is good for these darker roles. I’d like to see her as femme fatale soon.
Long live Katie!
Rick, why do you think she’s crazy?
