Should Javier Bardem Play Khan in a Star Trek Sequel?

Talking about a Star Trek sequel before the new movie even hits theatres may seem a little premature, but in this day and age, it is simply a given. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof are already signed to write a follow-up film, but the real question is, where do they go next? Now that they’ve revitalized the franchise, should they revisit familiar characters and situations from previous Star Trek adventures, or should they map out a course to a completely uncharted galaxy?

It’s hard to say what would be appropriate until we’ve seen the new movie, but the speculation has already begun, and one of the classic characters that is on a lot of people’s minds is Captain Kirk’s greatest nemesis, Khan. In a recent interview with Kurtzman, Orci and Lindelof, Coming Soon threw out a rather intriguing proposal: Javier Bardem as Khan?

This is how the writers responded:

Kurtzman: Oh my God!

Orci: Did you know we’ve actually mentioned that out loud as a possibility? What a great idea.

Lindelof: Come on. That’s a no-brainer. That would be the most amazing thing ever. Who would even what to see these [new] guys then? That’s the problem. You would just watch them for scenery.

Certainly the physical resemblance to Ricardo Montalban is there, and we already know that Bardem can play a bad ass villain from No Country for Old Men. Personally, though, I don’t have much interest in seeing them regurgitate something that has already been done before (and done well too). There are so many other Star Trek stories that could be told… why restrict yourself to boldly going where the previous movies went? If they’re aiming to reinvent Star Trek, then I say keep it different, and keep it fresh. What do you think… do you want to see J.J. Abrams tackle a Wrath of Khan remake? And if so, is Javier Bardem the only logical choice?

  1. No.

  2. I have yet to read the story but I just have to say that pictures awesome. Thank you Sean.

  3. Now that is ballsy. JJ’s Star Trek is already that good that it warrants a sequel and his movie has yet to leave the gate? And for that matter the sequel is a possible remake of Kahn?? or at least an introduction of Kahn? a remake of the one movie almost all fans agree is the best of the Trek movies? Now that takes balls.

I haven’t even seen this movie yet but they really think this Trek is going to crack 200-250 million dollar with a combo domestic and international B.O.? Now that is Ballsy.

  4. I dont think it would be a Wrath of Khan remmake as much as a redo of the episode that Khan was in. That might be kind of cool.

  5. Please…. no. Remake some of the crappy ideas first, not the best trek movie ever. I’d sooner have updated tribbles than a new Khan.

  6. there’s something innately flawed about this film and others like it.

On the one hand we’re supposed to forget everything before it and embrace this bold new direction.

But also, get ready to revisit all you favorite characters and storylines.

It’s a completely new franchise full of crazy new ideas. Now here’s our remake of Wrath of Khan.

  7. It would work if it was a re-telling of the “Space Seed” episode, along with more of Khan’s back story including some scenes from his origin. Khan could be cast as a some kind of fanatical Middle-Eastern despot who may be disturbingly similar to real-life characters. It could explain how he somehow conquers a great deal of the world probably through the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction. So there could be a topical aspect to the movie as well. It could be very good if done right.

  8. Lets see some new stories.

  9. I gave it a lot of thought and came up with Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell) from Lost as the perfect Khan. Besides being a spitting image of Ricardo as well as charisma and Personality, I think he is not as well known and wouldn’t force the rest of the cast to take a bench. Javier is good, but then Jack Nicholson was good in Batman, so good that Batman was barely remembered.

  10. Hopefully Orci and that other one die before they can do this.

  11. no, no, and no. if you watch the wrath of kahn you will see that the new movie has too much in common with it anyway. revegeful psychopath, ship carrying doomday weapon (red matter)(genesis device) even the dang centauri slugs(ceti eels). lets see some mirror on mirror shall we? why not pit the (U)SS Enterprise versus the (I)SS Enterprise??? now that would be “fasinating”. live long and prosper.

  12. Not a remake of WOK, but maybe another look at the TOS episode “Space Seed”, where we first meet Khan. With this new timeline Universe, the events of that episode can play differently and add a new twist to the story that gave us WOK. We don’t need to take away from WOK, it stands alone and does not need to be redone, but seeing how the Abramsverse is taking a fresh look at the original cast and story, maybe the destruction of Vulcan and the 40 something Klingon vessels in this version could have a trickle down effect that rearranges Khans arrival. Negating that, we could have the Borg make an appearance as a result of the universal shake up.

  13. I think Sacha Baron Cohen could be an inspired choice to play Khan (provided he could bulk up a little for the roll). He could probably create a character that is reminisant of Ricardo Montalban but at the same time take it to an edgy, insane direction that a gentectic super mutant with delusions of grandeur would deserve.
