Monday Morning Box Office Report: Wolverine Shreds Piracy

boxofficemay4_09

The bean counters over at Fox have a lot to be happy about this week as X-Men Origins: Wolverine had a solid opening to kick off the summer blockbuster season, earning $87 million. It wasn’t quite as successful as Iron Man last year, which debuted with $98 million, nor the last X-Men movie, which made $102 million in its first weekend, but all in all, a great showing for a movie that some thought would be compromised because of a leaked DVD-quality workprint. Elsewhere, Matthew McConaughey’s romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past didn’t live up to expectations, making just $15 million (apparently all the ladies wanted to ogle Hugh Jackman instead), and the CG film Battle for Terra had a catastrophic opening: just $1 million earned on over 1,000 screens. Yikes. Next weekend all eyes will be on Star Trek.
