Francis Ford Coppola’s Tetro Trailer

Back in 2007, Francis Ford Coppola returned to the director’s chair with Youth Without Youth, his first film following a 10 year hiatus. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite the comeback that a lot of people had been hoping for, and although I still haven’t seen it myself, it certainly looked like a pretty challenging flick (and not in a good way). The good news is that it seemed to inspire Coppola to get back in the game, and now we’re being told that his next film Tetro may actually be released before the end of this year. The question is, will it be any better than Youth Without Youth?

One of the things that people keep mentioning as a positive sign is the fact that this is Coppola’s first original screenplay since The Conversation (Youth Without Youth was based on a novel by Mircea Eliade). I guess that’s kind of cool, but after watching the trailer for Tetro, it’s pretty clear that this film also falls firmly in realm of the art house. The majority of it is shot in glorious black-and-white, but there appear to be dream sequences of some sort with colour. The movie stars Vincent Gallo as Tetro, a writer living in Buenos Aires who is re-united with his long lost brother Bennie (Alden Ehrenreich). As Tetro struggles to finish his play, the two brothers also must come to terms with the secrets buried in their past. Supposedly the movie is based partially on Coppola’s own experiences growing up, and of course, it’s cool to see him return to the central theme of family. What do you think? Will this be a proper return to form for Francis Ford Coppola, or is he now caught up in creating art that is only relevant to himself?

  1. that was like walking through a museum really fast….awesome

  2. When is the Reed tour video going to be posted? I’m dying to see it.

  3. When you set the bar so high in the 70’s it’s hard to even get halfway to those dizzy peaks. However I think the Coppola is going in a different direction, making personal, different and like you said challenging films for himself. This looks like it’s a slow burner but has enough elements to make it look like an engaging watch.

  4. RJ, that was a nice transitional comment from rus’ “walking through a museum” comment.

The rough footage of the Reed House Tour is in the can, so to speak. Jay’s going to edit the hour or so footage into 5 minutes that will undoubtedly make me look bad, but that’s not hard to do. During the tour, I get the chance to wear my Indiana Jones hat. I’m looking forward to seeing me undergo a lie detector test that gives me an electric shock when I lie! I also had more fun than I thought I would singing Paranoid on Rock Band.

  5. ah yeah, could you girls take your chi-chat over to a canktankerous tread and stop disrespecting the great Francis Ford Coppola, thanks.
