Disney Poster for Miyazaki’s Finding Ponyo… I Mean Ponyo

ponyoposter

Hayao Miyazaki’s newest animated film Ponyo on the Cliff is finally coming to North America this August courtesy of Disney, who handled the domestic release for most of his previous films (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.). It has been retitled to be simply Ponyo here, and the clever marketing folks over at Disney just released the first U.S. poster for the film. Does it look familiar? Yeah, I thought so too.

Obviously they’re hoping that a subconscious association with Finding Nemo will help the film’s chances for success, although the star-studded voice cast probably won’t hurt either. Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, Frankie Jonas and Noah Cyrus are just a few of the actors who contribute vocal talents for the English dub (which, based on previous Disney dubs, should actually be pretty decent). Anyway, a French trailer for Ponyo also recently hit the web… check it out below and see what you think. Are you looking forward to Miyazaki’s latest?

  1. After this trailer I am looking forward to it a little more. I thought it was just going to be a movie for little kids, but the end of the trailer shows some other stuff as well. And yeah, those posters look alike. Makes me feel like they don’t think it can make it on its own strength.

  2. lets not put the works of Miyazaki on the same level as Finding Nemo… I thought other works by Miyazaki looked like little kids film at first look but this has never been true.. He always makes works of art

  3. You put Ponyo in the headline twice instead of Nemo.

  4. I know… I meant to. But maybe it sounds better your way.

  5. I’ve never understood the reason behind getting A list actors to do animated voices. The majority of the audience, kids, don’t know who they are in the first place and don’t give a rats ass either. I’m sure it’s a marketing reason but it just seems strange to me.

  6. This is my most anticipated movie of 2009.

  7. I like it when Miyazaki tells his more adult stories, but like jerry marks said, even the kiddie looking films always end up being all-ages faire.

Miyazaki is a master an you must bear witness.

“I’ve never understood the reason behind getting A list actors to do animated voices.”

Real actors sound better than voice actors any day of the week, as every Miyazaki film has clearly proven. Real voices cut the cheese.

  8. I saw it in Japan, and I loved it. Can’t wait for it to be released here.

  9. if its anything like his previous films it should be great cause i love kiki’s delivery service, castle in the sky, my neighbour totoro can wait to see it
